I got my first interview.

I'm probably not going to get a job offer at this point. It's more of a getting your foot in the door kind of deal.

There's a local large trucking company here that I sent a letter of inquiry to a month back. It was a lead that one of my professors gave me. He knew the general manager out there and gave me his e-mail address. I didn't hear back from the guy.

I found the HR person's profile on a job site and sent a letter to her last week. She just called me and told me that she talked to the general manager about me and he wants to interview me next week. They don't have any openings right now for white collar types, which is what I'm going for, but at least I might make the list of people to call when an opening does become available.

Another thought has occurred to me. I know that company needs drivers. They frequently advertise for those kinds of jobs. I have a Class A CDL and I currently drive for a living. The general manager may want to put me in a truck until something opens up in the office. An offer like that wouldn't surprise me.

You might be able to start as a driver until something else opens up. That way you can prove how versatile you are because I would bet the white collar position would benefit from someone who really knows all sides of the business.

Best of luck! You are a motivated and sincere person who will be an asset to any company that hires you!

Mostly regional and local.

It would have to be a pretty strong offer for me to hop in a truck for a while. Very strong if they expect me to be out overnight at all.

Sometimes working your way up makes you better at the higher level job.

IMO: They would be doing themselves a favor if they hire you.

...if they tell you that your worth as a manager will be higher if you know the company from '...the ground up'.

I went out on a similar gig once and after a week of getting to know their equipment, their terminals and their operations I realized that even my superb management skills wouldn't be able to rescue this dog and I retracted my application and found another way home.

They've been recruiting brits and Europeans lately.

I don't want to say who it is, but they are legit and respected. It's not just a trucking firm. They are into warehousing and distribution. They have their own distribution centers. It's not Walmart.

However, you are right in that you have to watch out for bad companies in trucking because there are a lot of them. I've been around enough to know who is good and who isn't for the most part as far as the big guys go, and I know where to look for good information on companies when I don't know enough about them.
