(8,747 posts)Ouistreham is one of most incredible scenes in film.

(29,414 posts)And, make sure you see it in its original 2.35 : 1 aspect ratio, not even the "cropped for 16x9" format seen all too often now. It's one of the few wars movies that I like and would also like to see on the big screen.
Maybe someone will do a restoration of it as they have with other movies of the time and then release it to theaters...

(8,747 posts)Is the poorly down rear projection in the scene with Rommel on the beachfront. I'm sure that modern technology could fix that.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)But yes, a good restoration with modern tech could fix that nicely

(21,925 posts)by the No. 4 Commando of Free French (who wore green berets, the original green berets) under Captain Phillippe Kiefer is the first thing I think of when the wonderful film The Longest Day is mentioned. The American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne who descend on the town of Sainte Mere Eglise is also another incredibly shot scene.
Another WWII film that is pretty powerful is the German film Die Brucke (The Bridge) about the end of the war when 13 and 14 year olds were being pressed into service against the advancing Americans and a group of children fight to defend a bridge.
Another good WWII film is Normandie Niemen, about the several squadrons of free French pilots sent by General de Gaulle to the eastern front to help the Russian Air Force. They were named the Normandie Niemen squadrons by the Russians. They had a number of aces and four of them won the highest Russian military honors, Hero Of The Soviet Union.

But did the film-makers think we couldn't tell the difference between an Irish and a Scottish accent?

(16,950 posts)We just finished Midway last night and are trying to find Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, but can't find that one yet.
We were on a John Wayne kick last week and saw, In Harm's Way and They Were Expendable. Plus Operation Pacific (just okay). Next up is Tora! Tora! Tora! Mostly the Pacific Theater movies so far, but we're going to keep watching all we can get ahold of.
Thanks for the suggestion!

(28,940 posts)Follows an infantry platoon from North Africa through to the end of the war in Germany. Thanks to the sergeant, played by Lee Marvin, they manage to stay alive and together. Marvin does a brilliant job. He was probably channeling his time as a Marine in the Pacific.
Try to score the Reconstruction version, ie director's cut. This was a labor of love for the writer and director, Samuel Fuller. He was in the 1st Infantry Div, WWII.

(7,570 posts)Is at the very beginning, when the German Shepherd casually and quietly comes out of the bunker and hauls ass up the street before all the shit goes down.
My wife and I laugh at that every time.
