French judge says parents can’t name their daughter Nutella

http://blog.sfgate.com/sfmoms/2015/01/26/french-judge-says-parents-cant-name-their-daughter-nutella/

Nutella might be one of the world’s most delicious treats, but is it an appropriate name for a child?

A French judge has ruled no.

When a newborn baby in Valenciennes was named after the chocolate-hazelnut spread, the Officer of Civil Status was alarmed and reported the name to the local court. A judge decided the parents didn’t choose the moniker with the child’s best interest in mind, according to a report in La Voix du Nord....

The name ‘Nutella’ given to the child is the trade name of a spread,” the court’s decision read, according to Google translator. “And it is contrary to the child’s interest to be wearing a name that can only lead to teasing or disparaging thoughts.”

Try getting some chocolate without it. You'll be looking for a while.

a few years ago, a Japanese couple decided to name their daughter "Mao"-- not as in "Mao Tze-tung", but as in 魔王--the Japanese word for "Satan". Fortunately for the girl, the local authorities refused to register the name.

for my baby.

i asked the hospital if i could name my child anything i wanted. they said yes. i asked if i could even give my child a different last name or *any* last name i wanted. they said yes. i remember i asked: "i could name my baby frank zappa if i wanted to?"

they said yes.

i did not name her frank zappa, in case you were wondering. but the nice thing was that i had that option.
