3. I had a close encounter with a skunk once......several, actually....

A cold, snowy, February day, I had to go down in our woods to look for a cow that we thought was about to have a calf. Walking along, I saw a mother skunk and four babies trundling along, all in a straight line with Mama in the lead, through the snow--heading straight for me. Remembering my grandfathers wise words--"skunks always have the right-of-way"--I stopped and stood perfectly still. Mama didn't deviate from her course; she led her four babies right over the toes of my boots! as if I wasn't even there! (I could've kicked every one of those skunks for a field goal! but, of course, would've been headed for the shower and a tomato-soup bath if I had....)

Since I had boots on, Mama made no comment about the smell of my feet.

5. Well, the outsides were fine, absolutely no skunk odor!

(the INsides of course, probably STILL smell, a quarter-century later! )

I never caught any scent of these critters, they had no odor to them, and didn't leave any scent on me. But THEY probably thought, "Yick, those humans smell horrible!"

11. :) Who living in country hasn't had at least 1 run-in w/ skunk - even if it was just smelling one w

while driving?

BF, her kids & I at my cabin. We'd painted kitchen floor & couldn't use back door. Asked one of kids (teen) to get something off patio. After about 90 secs she comes storming in front door & yells at me, "You did that on purpose!" Seems a skunk was enjoying scraps we'd tossed on leaves piled on patio before taking them up to burn pile. She'd turned corner & shone flashlight right on the skunk. At least she headed back around cabin before critter could react.
