Daily Holidays - March 13

Coconut Torte Day Seems only 51 weeks ago we were last celebrating Coconut Torte Day with a delicious, moist, coconutty coconut torte. But no, apparently it’s been a whole year! Thank goodness it’s rolled around again so soon. What could be more exciting than the smell of a cake in the oven?

Not just any cake either. This will need at least three layers of sponge. But it’s not about the sponge. It’s about the filling. Creamy. Coconutty. Close your eyes, and pretend you’re in Mexico…

You want to go for it? Good! So a regular cake mix will probably do for the sponge. Because, remember, it’s not about the sponge. If you’ve a good recipe of your own, wheel it out. For the filling, you’ll need lots of sour cream, flaked coconut and sugar. Whip it all together, and smother the sponge in it, on all sides, and in between. Then, devour. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/coconut-torte-day/

Digital Learning Day Digital Learning Day is this week, officially on Friday, March 13. Or, as Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake would tell you: Hashtag it (#DLDay).
As a teacher, your response might be somewhere between “I’m so excited to see the projects coming out. I have a Digital Learning Day celebration ready to go!” and “Oh, who am I kidding? I know digital learning is important, but do I really need to take on one more thing? I have feedback to give, tests to grade, and projects to help students organize.”
If the second reaction is yours, stop, take a deep breath, and relax. While #DLDay is officially happening this week, that doesn’t mean that your students can’t take part in the movement next week or next month. Digital Learning Day—an initiative organized by the Alliance for Excellent Education with the help of corporate sponsors—is about empowering students and teachers and increasing college and career readiness. It’s certainly too big to be confined to one day or one activity.
That said, you can still join the fun this week. Below is a collaborative activity that addresses issues of trust, anxiety, and digital citizenship using a Google Form survey. Students in your class, district, and beyond can answer the seven questions and then mine the data to analyze trends in how people use their digital devices. http://www.edweek.org/tm/articles/2015/03/10/digital-learning-day-2015-a-quick-start-activity.html

K-9 Veterans Day March 13 is K9 Veterans Day, the day when all military dogs should be commemorated. This is an unofficial holiday, but the enthusiast make efforts to change the situation.
The United States K9 Corps were created on March 13, 1942. Since then the dogs officially became the part of military service. Border Patrol K9s, Customs K9s, Police K9s, Secret Service K9s, Airport Service K9s and FBI K9s daily work to save and protect the Americans and the homeland. That is why military dogs should be honored accordingly.

Military dogs have always been a part of American military efforts. They continue to serve on the borders on land and sea everyday. The dogs are trained to provide numerous functions, including search, rescue, explosives detection, scout, patrol and enemy subdue.

K9 Veterans Day was created by Joe White of Jacksonville, Florida. He was Vietnam War veteran, K9 handler and trainer. Joe White died on October 24, 2009 and since then his wife continued the effort to get nationwide recognition for this holiday. New Jersey officially recognized the holiday in 2010. The enthusiast from other states sign petitions to show the public support for her efforts to legislators. https://anydayguide.com/calendar/448

Ken Day Ken Day celebrates the occasion in 1961 when Barbie’s long-term on-off boyfriend, Ken Carson, first appeared on the scene, exhibited by his makers Mattel at a toy fair. In spite of some unfair comments about his manliness, and the rather more likely suggestions that he cared more about his clothes than his love life, the romance blossomed. The couple had a brief separation in the 1960’s, but then stayed together until 2004. Then, in a move that shocked the world of plastic celebrities, Barbie announced their break-up, and transferred her affections to Blaine Gordon, an Australian surfing dude. Ken hadn’t given up though, and in 2011 made some much-publicised attempts to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary by winning her back.

Ken Day is probably best celebrated with a wholesome date night or a barbecue on the beach, a very large hair-do and some polyester leisure wear. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ken-day/

National Open An Umbrella Indoors Day Everybody knows that opening an umbrella indoors is supposed to be bad luck. But is there any truth behind this age-old superstition? Fortunately for those spending sleepless nights pondering this question, there is actually a wacky holiday dedicated to finding out the truth. The aptly-named Open An Umbrella Indoors Day was invented in 2003 by a man called Thomas Knibb. Knibb allegedly hoped to defy silly superstitions by encouraging people to open their umbrellas indoors and observe the (non-existent) consequences. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/open-an-umbrella-indoors-day/
