Toilet paper over or under solved? Not.

Original Patent For Perforated Toilet Paper On A Roll Solves Over Vs. Under Debate Once And For All
By Mary Beth Quirk March 17, 2015
After pitting loved ones and enemies alike against each other for what feels like all of human existence, it seems we may finally have a definitive winner in the “over vs. under” toilet paper draping debate.
Though there are still likely to be those who remain loyal to the “under” side of the line, as writer Owen Williams points out on Twitter, Seth Wheeler’s original patent for his perforated toilet paper invention in 1891 shows the paper in an “over” position, indicating that that is how it’s meant to be used.

...

Wheeler’s Albany Perforated Wrapping Paper Company was the first in the world to make perforated toilet paper, originally patenting that idea in 1871 (PDF) before the 1891 patent added the roll aspect.

We who put it under are merely improving the original design. Happens all the time. Besides, the original drawing wouldn't have been as clear if he'd drawn it for proper use.

1. Under if you have toddlers or pets.

Over if not. Over is more susceptible to errant unraveling at the hands or paws of the uninitiated.

Over is more manageable for legitimate uses, closer to the hand and easier to see where the perforations are.

2. I tend to think it as a convenience vs. care issue.

To do so over, means to do it for convenience and faster dispensing.
To do so under, means cats can't just roll it around to waste as easily, unless they shred it, then all bets are off the table.

4. Seth Wheeler obviously did not use cats during technical evaluation

If Seth had verified his toilet paper dispensing method using cats, the patent would have shown the roll in the under position. Follow on test and evaluation had demonstrated the utility of positioning the roll in the under position. There should have been an engineering change proposal submitted to correct the deficiency of the design.

9. I don't see how the picture resolves anything, since it doesn't show the roll on the holder

It is shows as it is in order to make the perforation more visible, but without the context of a holder/wall, you can't really tell if it is over or under.

Also, the patent is for the perforation -- the rolls themselves already existed.

Not that I really care one way or another, but ...

13. I can't even be bothered to put the rolls in the holder.

I just leave them on the floor when I get a new one out of the pack. Works just as easily. My wife eventually puts it in the holder after a while. I'd probably never get around to it.

She hasn't left me over it yet.

and I put it over.

It doesn't matter much to either of us. Cat free household.
