Can you be fired from a job after you've already given them notice? Does it count as being fired at the unemployment office?I gave 2 weeks notice at job I hate (a couple days extra, actually). They scheduled my exit interview for my 2nd-to-last work day there. Then, right after I gave notice, an emergency came up at the hospital job and so to help out, I've been working extra shifts and two times called out at the other job -- both on Fridays, which is their *slowest* day and one when they already have extra staff.
So next Friday is my last day there and last night I found 2 messages from HR, the first asking that I call her before the end of the day this past Friday and the second one asking that I call her before I report to work on Monday.
I presume I'm going to be fired; why else try to get me to call before I show up to work?
Dayum. Now I regret giving them notice. A co-worker didn't show up the 2 busiest days of the year -- last Monday and Tuesday. He was put on warning long before me, it looked like maybe things were getting worse for him. Now I'm wondering if they fired him even ahead of the 2 busiest days of the year and left me alone on the phones for a couple hours with back-to-back calls! Boy are they ever circling the drain there. I'll have to give him a call and see...

(16,330 posts)plenty of people give two weeks notice only to be told they can leave earlier than they planned. Some employers are bitter. Others just think it's better to move on.
I'm not sure about actually being fired once you've given notice though.
In your case, I think they want you to stay.

(14,881 posts)Just got off the phone with HR, who said management decided to consider last week my last day, but will pay me through this week!!!! it's such a relief because I really needed the $$ to tide me over.
They don't want us back because we are in a position to do very serious damage if we're angry or disgruntled.
I think it's because my current manager knows that my prior manager had screwed me over royally. She also knows that we're grossly underpaid, that we know that our days are numbered. And my co-workers on her team really like me, as does she.
She may also be remembering how I helped her with the prior manager from very early on by giving her ammunition to get that evil %^&$!!! taken off her client and knocked down a peg or two.
I don't even have to go in for an exit interiew. Instead, they are mailing me a package.

(23,593 posts)non work performance reasons, you have a better chance to collect unemployment. Although it sounds like you already have another job lined up.

(14,881 posts)and no matter what, they've had to pay unemployment.
That's why they've resorted to trying to torture us into quitting.
Dayum. I should have given them a month's notice

Now I can finish seeding my pasture and get some other outdoor chores done. I'll have plenty of cloudy/rainy days this week for the indoor chores.
Next up -- tomorrow is absent lab tech's dr appt to find out if she can come back to work yet. Hopefully she'll continue on paperwork duty for a while longer

(50 posts)That seems really petty. I am thinking that whether or not they "can" do this is going to depend on the employment laws of that state.
