(7,339 posts)they think only about a dozen colonists might have gone to that site...Intriguing, I wonder if the mystery will ever be solved.
Thanks for the link!

(50,453 posts)...that the Croatan population in the area took pity on the stupid colonists in this settlement and moved them inland before winter? The last place you want to be in the middle of the winter is on the Outer Banks!

(7,339 posts)You're right, the colonists were stupid, they burned a village because they thought the Indians stole a silver cup. Not exactly endearing yourselves to the local population! Especially when you've colonized an exposed area and you're vastly outnumbered and might just have to rely on their charity to survive.

(17,066 posts)... they claimed they attacked the village because the thought the Indians had stolen a silver cup. I find in the history of Indian genocide in America that the reasons alleged for massacres are often trumped-up excuses for simple bloody-mindedness.

(50,453 posts)Croatan was the Native American tribe existing in the area when the Roanoke Colony settlers had set up housekeeping on the coast. The colonists set up housekeeping on Roanoke Island and were being supplied from England. Well...eventually the supplies stopped coming. My theory is, the settlers simply integrated with the locals, moved inland to get away from the horrific coastal weather, and interbred with the natives. Then they all moved to present-day Robeson County, adopted surnames like Locklear, Lowry and Oxendine, and formed the present-day Lumbee nation. (Yes, the actress Heather Locklear is at least part Lumbee.)

(25,771 posts)I'm sorry that my little joke was clearly d.o.a.
my use of a smiley was sort of cryptic
perhaps I should instead have used a simile - you see,
While a Croat was definitely indigenous,
A Croatian's from across the sea
And was only used a native - as double entendre
