OK, I finally saw Scrillex last night

I swear this is like a template; it's the exact same experience I had with deadmau5 two years ago:

"I'm too old; I don't get this stuff; blah blah blah. Tickets are available? Fine, I'll go just to prove how lacking this modern music is."

(Five minutes in)

"Damn, this dude is good."

(and by new-ish I mean established from 2004 - present) Off the top of my head there's:

Twentyone Pilots
Tame Impala
Silversun Pickups
Foals
X Ambassadors
Slash f. Miles Kennedy & The Conspirators
Florence & The Machine
Steve Aoki
Mumford & Sons
Alabama Shakes
Cage The Elephant
Arctic Monkeys
Fitz & The Tantrums
Lupe Fiasco
Of Monsters and Men
TesseracT
Tim Bowness
Steven Wilson
TV On The Radio

Oh and I saw Zac Brown Band last night too - awesome show.

I listen to Alt Nation on satellite radio. I'm 43, but I keep up with new rock and new alt rock. I drive for a living and that's mostly what I listen to at work.

There's a metric shit-ton of superb music being made these days...it's just that a lot of it is by people the major labels have no interest in (even though some have good sized audiences...you have to have mega-star potential for the big labels to even look at you any more).

5. Good list - if I might suggest adding Future Islands and Mr. Gnome.

8. Steven Wilson (and Porcupine Tree)

is quite brilliant.

I'm also a fan of Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Thievery Corporation and some of the other leading lights of trance/electronica.

And I am no spring chicken, having seen the Beatles on Sullivan when I was a wee lad.

9. I saw a guy wearing a shirt from Steven Wilson's latest tour at the airport.

I was telling him you don't see too many people wearing Steven Wilson tour shirts around. That's pretty sweet when you do see it.

And how come Steven Wilson isn't playing large venues like the Hollywood Bowl at this point? He easily could attract that kind of audience even if his music isn't for everybody.

Oh also Tim Bowness' new album "Stupid Things That Mean The World" is pretty awesome if you haven't heard it yet. It's a must if you are an SW fan!

10. I can't figure it out.

Solid vocalist in the prog style, brilliant songwriter/producer/arranger, and guitarist supreme. Anyone who is attracted to almost anything in the post=Syd Pink Floyd catalog would find a ton of Steven's/PTree's music irresistible.

Viz:

ETA - the recapitulation at 10:30 and solo thereafter are as emotionally shattering as anything in the Floyd's catalog save perhaps for "High Hopes" and "Comfortably Numb" done live.

I also like Benasi, Aoki, Knife Party. I'm feeling the trance guys too like Armin, Ali & Fila, Tiesto, Afrojack. Tons of good djs out there now. Lots of guys are copying parts of the Scrillex sound into their mixes.
