The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy daughter just brought home a "2nd chance" adoption doggie- Jasmine is a very lucky doggie.
As she is now in a forever home.
Jasmine has been a long time in the shelter. A 6 y/o small mix in good health but very shy-and maybe not good with men as she had previously lived alone with a elder lady.
We did the final get together with the family dog & I to make sure Jasmine would accept us. The Portland Humane Society does a overkill job to assure the animals going to a good home. I thought it overkill only because I'm a Dr. Doolittle type & my wife Ellie May Clampett. Animals we do well.
My daughter is also shy a dog was recommended as therapy in part. I was very Ok with the idea even though we have a wonderful doggie it is very much my doggie.
On the ride home my daughter was in the seat behind me. Jasmine who had not paid much attention to me tentatively came up to the drivers seat & jumped in my lap. I realized this was probably her happy spot when she was with her former owner. She seemed serenely happy for the rest of the ride & did not mind me giving her a pet.
Once home she has taken to my daughter completely & follows her round. I'm pretty sure the dog bed is going to go un-used. She is so very happy up on the bed with her new mom.
Proud dad here...
Updated for a Pic!
Jasmine all tuckered out ready for bed.

(8,175 posts)I hope Jasmine works out for your family. Sounds like you are the right family for her.
I too took in a third chance shelter dog, and he turned out to be one of the best dogs I've ever had. The no-kill shelter was getting ready to take him to the Humane Society, where he might have been put down, because they couldn't find anyone who would put up with him. He was a lovely dog...but big and a rambunctious nine-month-old when I got him. He just needed room to run, exercise, another dog to play with, and a job to do. I will forever miss him.

(31,384 posts)congrats to your family--and especially your daughter--for giving Jasmine her forever home.
Snowy was rescued when less than a year old out of a high kill shelter in Georgia by a SC rescue group.
Her foster kept her for awhile because the woman's dad was living with them and took to her. When
he passed away, Snowy was adopted by a family with kids. Apparently, she wouldn't learn to use
the doggie door to outside, and they returned Snowy to the foster. She was 3 when I adopted her
almost 6 years ago and she is my constant companion--following me all over the house all day long.

Anyhow thanks & she is doing fine. But one sniff of trouble & she zips back to my Daughters room then waits at the door for her to return. Very much her dog & they are a great pair.
Happy Dad turning couch potato & out.

(17,210 posts)I live in Portland too. We adopted Snickers there (Snicky is in Cat Heaven Now) and the Portland humane society is awesome.
God bless your new family member and all of you dog lovers. You are just so awesome.

(2,533 posts)That her long Kennel stay days are over. And those things she loved can be hers again...
Really coming out of her shell now & I noticed she keyed in on the sound of a Pizza crust being cut. A kitchen wise doggie should know that sound. A tidbit of crust was gladly accepted from me.
And back to the bed-

(2,533 posts)1st day of my daughter at school I went to her room & opened the door for Jasmine. She came out. I thought she was exploring. Nope-she did a room to room check for her owner & went back to her bed & waited for her. Poor little girl piddled a bit before getting out the door she was so excited when her owner came home.
2nd day of my daughter coming home from school. Jasmine waited all day in her room & did not want to come out to explore. She made it outside without any errors & once back in basically did the happy doggie goes bonkers dance. I wish I had it on camera but it was adorable. She even came up to me & gave me a kiss after jumping up on & around my daughter.
We have an adorable girl very full of love & energy. Sweet & gentle..
I could not recommend a rescue animal for everyone but if you Can-Do.
