Name a band or performer you first appreciated AFTER they broke up / retired / passed away

Inspiration for this thread is the John Wetton / Bill Bruford / David Cross / Robert Fripp edition of King Crimson.

I thought they were the ultimate prog band, and that the album "Red" gave birth to some of the most popular current "prog metal" bands like Dream Theater.

As such...even though I had enjoyed Adrian Belew's solo work and tenures with Zappa and Bowie, and even though Bill Bruford was along for a large part of the ride, I compared this lineup to the Wetton band and found them to be a huge pain in the testicles by comparison. It sounded too much like Robert Fripp working out some kind of Talking Heads fetish.

Until years later. In the last two years I've gone back and listened with fresh ears (and without comparing them to anything or anyone) and I really enjoy a lot of it.

Has that ever happened to you?
