(11,175 posts)Note the fine print in the lower left at the end. Gavin Aung Than took words by Watterson -- I think it was excerpted from a commencement speech he gave -- and illustrated them.

(149,589 posts)Thanks for pointing it out!
He did a great job illustrating Watterson's words, though.

(776 posts)The trick is finding that undemanding job that affords you time to pursue your real interests (music in my case), yet at the same time pays enough to not starve.
But still, great advice from Watterson, especially in today's society.

(36,827 posts)What I got out of it is we should develop our self-worth by something other than how well we are performing in the rat race. We are all limited in the number of trips we get around the sun. Personally I'd just as soon not have my obituary mention what I did to benefit my employer. I think there's a lot more worthy brass rings out there.

(36,827 posts)Creating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement. In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if its to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake. A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth.
Youll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what youre doing. There are a million ways to sell yourself out, and I guarantee youll hear about them.
To invent your own lifes meaning is not easy, but its still allowed, and I think youll be happier for the trouble.
