The general shittiness of late-80s top-40 and MTV had driven me to classic rock and classical music, but Nirvana hitting it big got me listening to the radio again. Plus, I was living on the East Coast at the time, but still felt like Seattle was my hometown, so seeing bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam making Seattle cool was pretty gratifying. I also liked that Cobain frequently and publicly took on the rampant misogyny and homophobia, and general macho bs among the hard rock bands (and their fans) of the time.
