There was an unusual stillness as I approached the doves cage this morning.

One of my flock was near death. She was sitting alone in the shelter of a wicker bridge.

Late yesterday afternoon she was puffed out as if she was cold. I turned up the oil heater that sits on the floor near them.

She was one of the ones that always came close to me as I sat sipping coffee from before dawn into late evenings. A beautiful dusky brown with small orange rings around her sweet brown eyes.

I gently lifted her from her resting spot and cuddled her to the warmth of my chest. We sat like that for a brief time until she passed quietly away, as beautiful in death as she was in life.

I was blessed by her love, her beauty and her song. I watched her enter my world a few years ago. I'm glad I was able to hold her so that she did not die alone.

The flock has returned to life as usual.

7. I took comfort in that thought today.

Only a very few of the flock members enjoy interacting with me. She was very special.
All featherheads are special, some more than others.

8. Ahh

I'm so sorry for your loss. I am a fellow wild bird lover as well, and especially of Mourning Doves. I'm glad you were with her to comfort her in the end. (((HUGS)))

16. "The Parrots of Telegraph Hill"

Your story reminded me of that movie. It was so touching. What a peaceful passing you provided the little dove.

17. a tender and sweet passing

for her next to your heart. how beautiful of you and she to share those moments.

your sharing brings tears to my eyes. this early evening a small sparrow was clinging to the storm door. the temperature was dropping fast. i was going to let her in but she was very skittish and would fly away whenever i approached the door. now i'm afraid the poor creature is froze to death somewhere.
