Great movie. The effects amazing, the acting superb. There were a couple of "who didn't see that coming" moments, but it's a movie. Fairly believable plot and details at least to me. Had a few huge quotable lines too " let's science the shit out of it" and another..... I think I liked this movie better than Star Wars (which was pretty damn good) and better than any movie I've seen in a long time (excluding Star Wars). Love that there was no violence and little, but extremely effective, cursing.
Is this up for awards? I don't follow that stuff so I don't know really.

(20,044 posts)Matt Damon already won the Golden Globe. It's nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay and 4 minor categories.
The author of the book, Andy Weir is a software engineer by day and a space nerd by night. He wrote the book and SELF PUBLISHED it on Amazon.

(5,170 posts)Great film. Liked it better than the Sandra Bullock one, but someone ruined that for me by telling me that she dies, so the whole film, I kept waiting for her to die. I actually thought she was either going to drown or get eaten by a shark when he finally got back to earth because she absolutely HAD to die, per what I had been told. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more in a different situation.

(1,232 posts)rescued. We all knew the outcome from the very beginning. No surprises, no hero moments. Not even much of a story. Lots of monologue. Lots of potatoes. In space. BFD.
My imagination was captivated by the possibilities of life in space since I was reading Edgar Rice Burroughs at a single digit age some 40 years ago. This has none of that, and he wrote that shit over 100 years ago. WTH, right? This is the best they've got to offer?
Yeah, I'm a cynic. I like aliens and beasties.... Not intrigued by a pasty white guy alone in outer space growing potatoes and waiting to be rescued.
Mediocrity and lack of imagination at its absolute finest. It was like... toast. With no butter.
I love Matt Damon, he's fantastic, but geez, this was a total washout for me. Why in anyone's name this is being considered as great film-making and story telling is way, way beyond me, and more than anything speaks only to the fawning stagnation of imagination and mediocrity that Hollywood has descended into. This was the blandest, most un-interesting movie I couldn't watch.
No offense intended to those who are bound to be offended by my opinion. Please accept my apologies in advance, I mean no personal offense directed at anyone in particular.

(10,946 posts)worthy film. It seems as if they produce a film where one actor/actress carries the bulk of the film they think that they need to nominate it for Best Film and/or a Best Actor/Actree nomination.
