i remember you being born under the china cabinet on that mid-june day 1998. you were such a little runt and in enough pain that we weren't sure how well you were going to grow. but over the years you grew into such a brute, wide like a linebacker in the shoulders and slender as a dancer in the back. your shallow hip sockets left you looking like you were an old fire truck with one person driving the front and one person driving the back, but you always got around just fine.
you were a quiet thing with the sweetest little voice and nothing was quite as funny as watching you run around the house with grasshoppers in your mouth. seeing their little legs sticking out never failed to crack me up. you loved laying in the sun and your little splash of lactose-free milk at night.
now, just as i was there when you entered the world, i am going back to the house where you lived your whole life to help return you to the earth.
may there be grasshoppers to catch, saucers of milk to drink and sunbeams to nap in on the other side of the bridge. rest easy, my sweet one. will love you and miss you for always.

And I really do understand. I lost my beloved and perfect kitty shortly before joining DU after fighting the good fight. Her name was Rhiannon. 
I lost Princess Toe a few months ago; she looked a lot like vega butt.
I would give anything to hear her yell at me, then crawl on my lap and place her paw on my cheek.

You are a good steward and friend - it is a horrid decision. We love our pets because they are family members.
I don't listen to gossipers and their opinion about how to mourn the loss of a friend. Cats are long-lived and special when they train their human correctly.
So far, I've been graced with 3 cats, a majestic dog, and a parrotling that tweeted about everything in bird language incessantly.
I won't patronize you by telling you how to grieve. We all do if we have beloved family and friends. The animals that choose to befriend us, and those that choose to become our friends is treasure more precious than gold.
