Many years ago when my kids were babies, sometimes a minute or two after Id awake from a nap, I would think I heard them crying, but when Id go check, he or she would still be sleeping soundly.
Now I have an elderly little blind Boston terrier who requires constant care. Sometimes when I wake up from a nap (she gets me up a lot a night to pee, so I nap sometimes in the day) I think I hear her barking for me to come get her from her bed, but when I check on her, shes peacefully sawing logs. Today the same thing happened. Mr. froggy was sitting near her bed and said she didnt bark.
Its a weird feeling to know I hear something when I really dont.
Does it ever happen to you?

(12,153 posts)If it's not really ringing, maybe you were expecting it to because you were in the shower.
I think that may be why I think Abby is barking. I expect her to after she's napped a while.
Whew. I hope I'm not losing it. But if I am, I've been losing it for 40+ years since my kids were babies.

(73,630 posts)Although I did once have a dream that I was still awake and suffering from sleep deprived hallucinations, and from there I woke up.
That was weird.

(12,153 posts)I think mine could be from sleep deprivation too.

(28,941 posts)Once in awhile I hear my mother calling my name. She's been gone for several years. No, I'm sure it's not her ghost, merely a pleasant memory.

(12,153 posts)I'd like to have an auditory experience like that.

(53,952 posts)Actually, it likely isn't, but more a subconscious concern and it manifests itself in a way to wake you. It is more about your fears/concerns working their way into your sleeping mind.
As for exploding head syndrome, I actually have it. But what you are describing isn't it. For those who don't know, it is basically a condition where your brain "overreacts" and sends a massive auditory impulse to the ears resulting in "hearing" a very loud sound which doesn't exist. It can be so startling, it wakes you from sleep. It is usually worse when one is under stress, having insomnia, or prone to panic/anxiety attacks.
frogmarch
(12,153 posts)about it a year or more ago. It's weird too. I also have occasional sleep paralysis. It used to terrify me until I found out what it was.
I think you may be right that the sounds I think I hear are from a subconscious concern - years ago, my babies, and now my poor little blind Abby.
I'm always just barely awake when I hear the sounds.
Oh, and I'm a sleepwalker. I wear regular clothes to bed (I have all my adult life), just in case I end up going out on the town.
Behind the Aegis
(53,952 posts)I have had this problem for YEARS! I never thought too much about it other than it was annoying. After I had a panic attack a few months ago, I started having EHS more frequently. It wasn't until I heard metal being dragged across concrete did I realize that wasn't possible for me to hear given my surroundings. So, I looked for more info and found EHS.
I don't sleepwalk anymore, thankfully. I did all the way through college. BUT...I do sometimes sleep with my eyes open (that freaks people out); I do talk in my sleep, not always in English; I sometimes sleep with an arm or leg straight up in the air; and I have even slept with a leg behind my head! My husband doesn't mind when I do that. LOL! I can't do it as much now because I need to lose some weight. If only I would sleepwalk on our treadmill downstairs.
Videos of us sleeping would probably be an internet hit! LOL!

(12,153 posts)My sleepy-time adventures arent nearly as exciting as yours. I cant say Im sorry, though. Ill take boring any time over going through what you do.
Glad you found info on EHS too. Its nice to be able to put a name on weird things like this, and to know theyre usually nothing to worry about.
Maybe you should think of having your own beddy-bye time reality show.

It's touching that your mother hears her mom calling her name. Very touching.

(11,791 posts)Basically, I hear what seem like fragments of faint conversations that I can't quite make out.
But hypnagogia consists of a whole host of odd hallucinations (like when you get off a boat and lay down for bed, yet feel yourself rocking as if still on the boat).

I'd never heard of hypnagogia until you posted about it. Maybe it fits some of the weird sleep-related goings on I have too. I've never seen a doctor about any of them because they don't bother me when I'm fully awake.
