Whereas in California, they're considered a white ethnic group similar to Italians. So my old boss could get on a plane, land in Honolulu, and find his ethnic identity had changed in the space of five hours!

And the Hawai'i version of a Polish joke is the "Portagee joke". 'Kay, get dese t'ree guys busting out of OCCC (county lockup), one Hawaiian, one haole, an' one Portagee. The lights and sirens all go off. Hawaiian guy finds a tree, climbs it, and says "pueo" (the onomatopoeic word for owl). Haole guy climbs one otta tree and says "Cheep cheep". Portagee guy climbs his tree and says "Mooooo!"
