Daily Holidays - June 7

National Chocolate Ice Cream
Day The exact origins of Chocolate Ice Cream Day are unknown, but few people will need a reason to celebrate an event that requires the eating of chocolate ice cream. Vanilla is considered the most popular flavor of ice cream, but ever since the Italians froze hot chocolate in 1692, chocolate has been a close contender. The celebratory day itself was likely started by an ice cream manufacturer to encourage greater sales of the delightful dessert, but the question remains whether there was really any need to encourage people to eat more chocolate ice cream. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-ice-cream-day/

VCR Day In this digital age, how many people still own collections of VCR box sets of favourite TV shows, old favourites and movies that are unavailable or simply haven’t been purchased on DVD? VCR day is dedicated to the humble video, and celebrates the simple elegance of analogue recording and playback. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/vcr-day/

I never used to click that. Then I'd take a look and marvel at how many were listed as "YouTube Star" or "Instagram Star."

But today runs an interesting gamut from Prince to Ghadaffi. It's quite a wild bunch.

That will be a great day!

They always include some old-timer like a dead president though.... and that ruins it!

So I will mention it today. One of my uncles served there and survived, God rest his soul.

I learned something heartbreaking when, a couple of decades after my war, I found the family of a friend who was KIA in Vietnam. My friend, Joe Rufty, had been named after his uncle Joe, who was KIA at Anzio in WWII.

Joe Hearne Rufty, Salisbury, NC
July 21, 1917 - June 2, 1944
KIA Anzio Beach, Italy

Joe Hearne Rufty, Salisbury, NC
February 23, 1945 - January 29, 1970
KIA Thua Thien Province, I Corps, South Vietnam

R.I.P. to them both.

Another of my uncles was at Anzio. My dad had five brothers; they all served in WW2. My mom had six sisters, most of whom married WW2 or Korea veterans.

my great-uncle Mathew survived D-Day. He landed with the 29th Infantry. But he didn't make it out of France. He was killed at the end of August 1944 near Brest, France.

I have photos of him, my 86 year old mom remembers him, as does her cousin, he has his Purple Heart. My neighbor down the hall remembers him & gave me a photo of my uncle, my neighbor's mom and himself.

If he was alive he would be 106.

I guess it is up to us to pass on those memories now. I wish I had learned more when they were all still alive.

Some pics of my dad in the Navy in WWII were handed down, but we have none of my uncles who served in the Army and Marine Corps Infantry.

My photos from Vietnam were destroyed so I had nothing to hand down until many years later. when a comrade sent a couple that showed both of us--together with friends who were KIA.

When I hand down those copied photos of me, at least I can also memorialize the names of some of those I knew and lost.
