David Byrne fans - The BIG suit is coming back!

Three’s a Trend: Big, Boxy Shoulders

Squared-off, strong-shouldered jackets have been all over the runways this season. First, they showed up in Gosha Rubchinskiy’s grown-up collection in Florence — a sort of homage to American Gigolo-era suits — and made up the bulk of Demna Gvasalia’s debut Balenciaga men’s show in Paris, where the silhouette was further exaggerated with narrow bottoms. Elsewhere, in Milan, we saw Dolce & Gabbana reinterpret its classic suiting with a ’50s jazz influence, as in this oversize double-breasted jacket and cropped trousers. The look teeters somewhere between “Stop Making Sense”-era David Byrne and Uncle Fester Addams — not one for everyone, to say the least.

We've finally left the seventies redux, and we're on our way to the eighties!!

Why do we always "retro" shit?

I remember in the sixties, the "rage" was the Roaring Twenties--people were learning the Charleston (that's how and why I learned it...!). In the seventies, we revisited the Forties (Bette Midler doing The Andrews Sisters) and skidded quickly into the Fifties (Happy Days, Sha Na Na, etc.). Most recently, we've done the sixties (Mad Men, the short-lived but cult followed Pan Am) and seventies (which was also done a decade or so back with That 70s Show)....

Back in the day, we used to look FORWARD--The Jetsons, Star Trek, The Time Tunnel, Lost in Space! I think we need some Future Fun in both our television AND our fashion--who wants to walk around in Jetsons or Lost in Space costumes? Anyone? Bueller?

Those fashion designers need to come with something really NEW!

Then again, there's the more formal DYNASTY look!

I was overseas during many of these years, but I had family with a VCR so I wasn't completely deprived!

But I did have a roommate who loved Solid Gold. So I was exposed to a lot of this...

5. Ladies and Gentlemen...the SOLID GOLD DANCERS!!!!!

They weren't even subtle, were they? They always wore skimpy outfits, and there was never a male Solid Gold dancer!

I think if they ever brought that show back (like they're doing with some other 'retro' efforts) they'd have to diversify their dance troupe a bit and probably be a bit less obvious!

I hope so because my hair just naturally is big. Taming it takes a lot of effort.
