I grew up with it and I've listened to it my whole life, along with other music of course. I love singing karaoke, so I've been practicing Miranda Lambert's "More Like Her" for the next time I get to go sing

(29,414 posts)Old stuff for the most part. Sometimes when I'm in the mood, I'll put it on Boot Liquor. And other times listening to Rev. Horton Heat is all the fix I need

(12,132 posts)he brought out Unknown Hinson for 5 or 6 songs. Pure genius! Love both of them.

(29,414 posts)If I paid attention to the club postings I'd probably be able to see him play. I know he's been at the Continental Club here a few times...
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)I've seen him twice here and I know I missed some appearances in between those two. So chances are good! I set up the "Bands In Town" app that lets me know when artists I like are near. Also follow them on FB if you do that.
Man I'll tell ya if you like him at all, his live shows are even better. And he tours with interesting bands. First time I saw him he was opening for Motörhead and the second time he was headlining a 1-day fest here in a bar parking lot. Got right up close and there was a ton of other fun bands. (Mostly a bunch of local rock-a-billy that I never heard of but will go see every time I can now.)

(1,681 posts)However, I do like me some "Outlaw Country" like Reverend Horton Heat, Hellbound Glory, Joe Buck, Unknown Hinson, Rachel Brooks, Hank III, Those Poor Bastards.
Country music can be quite versatile but you have to really, really dig for it. The radio wont go near these guys I mentioned.

(13,414 posts)Lots of great country music from the 50s-70s.

(18,837 posts)All of those songs about baby lookin' so good in her tight blue jeans...no thanks.
I grew up in a home where the soundtrack was Buck Owens, Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Hank Williams, Hawshaw Hawkins, Chet Atkins...all of the old-school Grand Ole Opry stars.
I do like some modern performers, including Miranda Lambert, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, and Justin Moore. My favorite contemporary performer is Zac Brown, but he's not contained in a "Country" box...he has a strong Jimmy Buffett side to some of his music (and he also performed his song "Free" and Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic" with him). His current album includes Country but also rock and some EDM.

(100,059 posts)Saw them live last year and they put on a great show.
And I love that they do all kinds of covers like:

(28,246 posts)The guys are adept at facial hair growth. The gals excel at wearing clingy cotton farm dresses. Both sexes manage tons of tattoos. But as to musical talent? Nada.
Another helpful hint: the guys who you never see without cowboy hats, like Kenny Chesney? They've got Trump Chickenshit Complex---they're bald but don't have guts enough to show it......

(12,132 posts)and much of the pop country from the 70s when I was a boy in Texas (Which is now probably considered classic lol - Merle, Waylon, Willie, Statler Brothers, Oak Ridge Boys, Don Gibson, Kris Kristofferson,
I love some weirdo newer stuff too like Them Poor Bastards, .357 String Band, Willie's boy Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real are great.
My wife listens to modern country a lot and I can't stand any of it. So basically, if it's new and on the radio, I doubt I like it (unless it's some late night specialty show playing off the wall stuff) but all the oldies are OK.

(100,059 posts)This album rules. He manages to offend just about everyone and everything. I'm kind of obsessed with it. Because country music needs more swearing:

(28,394 posts)Patsy Kline, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, etc.
And I do love the Dixie Chicks!
I don't listen to the modern stuff, but I do like Carrie Underwood and Blake Shelton. I hate any that sounds like "cater-wallin'." LOL

(12,132 posts)When my father-in-law died I grabbed up all his old records and he had a fair bit of Patsy, Kitty Wells and other stuff like that. Second best thing he ever did for me.

(57,376 posts)I can guarantee without reservation that you will not see or hear anything better than this all weekend.
That old Hank Williams, Bob Wills, and Lefty Frizzell stuff is just unbeatable.
Full disclosure: I am wearing two-tone cowboy boots.
When I'm elected President, everyone will listen to music through vacuum tubes (other than live, of course).
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)but this ranks right up there.
My favorite Christmas present my mom ever gave me was a pair of Lucchese ostrich skin boots. I wear them regularly.
I'll be voting for you.

(12,132 posts)but I found out later she was mad at my step-father and spending his money was one of her little ways of sticking it to the man. WAY too religious to leave him (though I tried to get her to) but this worked out well for me.

(4,138 posts)(Sturgill Simpson, Gillian Welch, OCMS, etc.)
Also, that 70s country rock that Gram Parsons pioneered.
Nashville commercial product from almost any era leaves me cold, but like most people, I love Johnny Cash.

(2,948 posts)I've been to the Grand Ole Opry twice. The last time Keith Urban was the headliner.
My Mom's ring tone was "Waltz across Texas" by Ernest Tubb. He was my Dad's favorite. We went to a concert many years ago and Ernest came down to sit at our table . My Dad was over the moon. 🎸💕

(12,132 posts)late 70s - we were on vacation in Tennessee and all I really remember was Jean Shepherd sang Wabash Cannonball. Don't remember anything else but I wish I did.
Was the Opry something people could just go to every day and there was somebody playing? I don't remember it being a big evening event (and I seriously doubt my cheap-ass step-father would have paid much for us to do anything) but I distinctly remember being in a theater and seeing her name on the marquis I loved that song.

(2,948 posts)I remember listening to it as a child. I am not sure what criteria was used to determine the lineup. My first trip was around 2004 & the last one 2008. By that time it was a weekly evening event. The tickets were a little steep, but certainly worth it.

I just worked in the office, but we could hear the music.

(12,409 posts)Pop and Authentic.
When real musicians play their hearts out it doesn't matter what "kind" of music they play.
I hate Pop music be it Rock, Rap, or Country.
Think of the difference as the comparison of a good short film and a lousy commercial.

Got no use for pop country or that achy breakey fakey twanger joke song crap.
I'm a metalhead and that's what I like. But I'll listen to anything with serious guitar in it. (Hence, Willie.)
And oh yeah! I heard the hands down spookiest version of You Are My Sunshine, and I liked that a lot!

(43,164 posts)I like bluegrass fiddle and banjo folk tunes.
But the modern Nashville stuff, I have absolutely no interest in. Probably the only genre of music that I don't have a designated pre-set station for on my car radio.
