Terrifying cable snap sent Navy plane plunging off aircraft carrier

One sailor remains hospitalized and three others are in recovery after an arresting cable snapped during a carrier landing in a rare and terrifying flight deck mishap on March 18.

Sailors on the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower's flight deck saw the landing go horribly wrong in an instant that Friday afternoon. An E-2C Hawkeye snagged the metal cable stretched across the deck. But the plane didn't slow, instead careening down the runaway and plunging over the edge, according to a squadron member who has spoken to eyewitnesses and those injured.

Behind it, the cable came unhooked from the port side and whipped around toward the superstructure, striking eight members of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 123.

Their injuries range from cuts and bruises to a skull fracture and broken bones, according to the squadron member, who asked not to be identified amid an ongoing investigation.

all things fail after a while. They try to change the cables before they fail, of course, but sometimes a flaw is not real apparent and they break.

That's why the planes land at basically full power, in case they need to recover and go around. Landing on a carrier is the ultimate "controlled crash."

The gear needed washing, anyway...

Any word if any of the deck crew were hurt by the cable? I saw several run towards the stern...

Video of the incident released by the Navy on Friday shows a harrowing few moments in which the aircraft disappears off the flight deck and reappears several seconds later. Crew members aboard the flight deck can be seen running. Two sections of the broken No. 4 pendant and purchase cable “recoiled sharply and backlashed,” the report says.

"Eight sailors suffered a variety of injuries, including a fractured ankle, wrist, pelvis and legs. One sailor received skull and facial fractures while another suffered a possible traumatic brain injury."

but it isn't. Strobe like effect.

If there is any fluid in the aircraft it is undoubtedly spray from the gear skimming a wave top.

In 2004, the E-2C's propeller system was changed; a new eight-bladed propeller system named NP2000 was developed by the Hamilton-Sundstrand company to replace the old four-bladed design. Improvements included reduced vibrations and better maintainability as a result of the ability to remove prop blades individually instead of having to remove the entire prop and hub assembly.
