A group of kayakers captured incredible video in the San Francisco Bay on July 10, 2016 -- a feeding frenzy ..
Imagine yourself being in the water that close to something huge. It's mind boggling.

(204,611 posts)I've been kayaking, but never saw anything like this! They're as big as a ship! This gives a new meaning to "whale watching!"

(204,611 posts)My friend's husband was on the shore taking pix when I was in a two person kayak on Lake Champlain. I wasn't bothered by the boats passing by, just stayed out of their way...

it must have smelled horrific. whales have very, very bad breath.

(5,106 posts)That's what always got to me while sailing in the open water. When you then see them at anchor or get close enough to see how they're actually plowing along---pretty chilling even from a sizeable sailboat.

(5,106 posts)The maneuverability of those big suckers negates even the best intentions of their crews. What always irritated me on smaller inland waterways was that, while sailboats have the right of way over motorized craft, and paddled craft have the right of way over sailing craft, good luck in expecting speeding powerboats ( and their wakes) and clunky pontoon boats to give any consideration to sailboats. While watching out for rowers when sailing, you're also really expected to be steering clear of motorized craft as well.

(72,300 posts)My sailboat was an old Beetle Cat.
I've heard that it takes those ships 5 miles to stop. We avoided 'em even on big sport-fishing boats. I miss those days. Good memories, good times.

(5,106 posts)We did sail on the Chesapeake with a 17 foot Day Sailor from time to time. I'm a senior citizen now and also missing it, now some twenty-five years back. My ex used to do some sport-fishing, also, and his experience near the big freighters was the same as yours.

(1,786 posts)You can tell by the photo's. Marin county is to the left of the bridge and the city is to the right from the films perspective.
So if this is in the bay, it's at the mouth of the bay. It is probably technically in the Pacific Ocean.

(21,770 posts)Look at around the 7th to 12th second and the 43rd-51st second, there is an island between TWO bridges.
That island is Yerba Buena/Treasure Island.
The action took place smack in the middle of the bay itself, between Angel Island and the East Bay shoreline (Berkeley/Albany area).
padfun
(1,786 posts)That is the Bay Bridge and it would make it north of it. So right in the middle of the bay it is.

(25,816 posts)It was in January I believe. We sailed out of the bay into the ocean and headed
south. He spotted a few whales and sailed in their direction, timing their dives.
As it happened, a whale rose very near the small sailboat. I held one of the lines
and leaned out and came within a foot or two of being able to touch one of the
whales. They seemed to play with us. I'll never forget it.
