The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHeidi, my 15 year old miniature schnauzer, was put to rest this morning.
She had a stroke two months ago and was un-responsive for 36 hours. We decided to let nature take it's course and damn if nature didn't give her back to us for awhile. A little tipsy, mostly blind and decidedly more affectionate than before which says a lot. About 4 AM Sunday morning she had a second stroke which left her barely functional and we decided to give her a few days. This morning she had a third stroke and it was obvious that we waited a day too long.
She joins every other pet we've known in the last 50 years at rest in the back yard. There's one hell of a pack out there.

It is always sad.

(3,702 posts)It is so hard to say goodbye - I always want "just one more moment". We lost our 17 yr cat earlier this year and we knew we had to make the decision, but it was so hard to give the vet the nod.

(4,261 posts)Hank was my first, when I was a little one, and then Molly (who liked to try and fight dogs five times her size).
We've also buried our pets out back. At least she is not suffering, so you did the right thing. I hope you can find some comfort and peace, and when you're ready, maybe even a new animal friend.

(12,145 posts)Losing a beloved pet is very hard. So is knowing when it's time to say goodbye. I waited almost too long, or maybe too long, with my dear little Boston terrier Abby because I couldn't bear the thought of being without her. That's hard too.
My heartfelt condolences.
