(60,010 posts)First few weeks of living down here, I was at a small "family style" restaurant, where you first order the main course
and then you order "sides" ( mostly vegetables, including fried okra)
I had ordered peas...."peas" was the only word on the menu for them.
and got a side plate of small brown beans.
Much chatter between the waitress and my dinner mates, till one triumphantly figured it out....
" She must have meant ENGLISH peas"
Waitress nicely said..." she shoulda said so, then" and turned to me..."do you want English peas?"
I was feeling pretty small and meek at that moment, but said I would like some.
"Sorry, we don't have those here"
( If you want potatoes, you have to say "arsh potatoes" or you wlll get sweet potatoes.
Took me months to realize "arsh" potatoes was an old time word for "Irish" ( white) potatoes.

And ENGLISH peas--I love that!
They do love their peas in UK and that "ARSH" place, too--they sell "mushy peas" in a can (really-like it's a feature)- LOL!
