My definition of boredom.

When trying to define boredom, I always go back to my first semester in college, in chemistry class.

Having taken chemistry in high school, in Mexico, I was bored out of my gourd listening to the instructor drill on and on and on, on stuff I already knew.

So I turned it into a sport. I was using a fountain pen to write my notes, and I had two colors of cartridges; red and blue. So I wrote my notes, switching back and forth between the two ink colors watching the ink change from red to purple to blue and then back to purple and red.

But this wasn't enough. No.

I decided to write my notes in Spanish while the lecture droned on in English. Then, for extra points, to transliterate the Spanish notes into the Greek alphabet, and write them from right to left.

All this, while the lecture was going on, in real time.

That's my favorite definition of boredom.

What's yours?

Sitting with my friends on a very hot summer day, leaning back against the block wall in my backyard, saying "What do you wanna do?" "I dunno, what do you wanna do?" "I dunno..." ad infinitum.

But when I was only halfway through the training they called me to serve on the coming Sunday. I didn't know all the lines and I was frantic. I was a no-show.

I know I'm going straight to hell.

But now, as someone who is middle-aged, I embrace "slow" hours. I take time to reflect. I try to be cognizant of my breathing. Be thankful for the sunshine (if it's shining). Feel the relief from a breeze. Strike up a conversation with a stranger.

I realize time flies all too fast, for the most part.

All that said, if you take away my internet connection for too long, I can get a little grumpy. The things I mentioned above are great -- for 5 or 10 minutes. Then I'm back on my phone or my laptop, so boredom is rarely existent anymore.
