1. The Prophet's Song, from A Night at the Opera (1975)

Massive.

3. " '39"

I call it the saddest song ever written about Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

5. These two are long-standing favorites of mine ...

and both appropriate for the topic of Freddie's premature demise.

I saw them in 1980 for the Game Tour. Simply fabulous.

7. Probably Bohemian Rhapsody

But that's a conventional choice which someone will probably post soon anyway.

A little bit more obscure, a song I first encountered in the movie Highlander, in which it was particularly poignant.

8. Freddie Mercury Now Races Around the Sun.

An asteroid soaring between Mars and Jupiter has been named for the singer, who died in 1991.

The honor was announced on Sunday in a YouTube video by Brian May, the former Queen guitarist who became an astrophysicist after the band broke up. It coincided with a posthumous birthday celebration for Mr. Mercury in Montreux, Switzerland. He would have been 70.
