EVER take Germany out of them.
They sent this up from the "Wiesen" of München (Munich) this afternoon.

By Monday, the elder one will be back working in her office in New York City, and the younger one will be in her office in Frankfurt, or in Zürich, or in London, or in Warsaw, or wherever they are sending her on that particular day (she thinks she's me).
But for today, it's time to take a few days off and let their roots take over (sorta--they are Rheinländerinnen, not Bavarian, but don't let THAT get in the way of anything. For today: "O zapft es!" .
It's great they can go and enjoy the festivities!

And if one doesn't come along, they MAKE it come along!

(54,302 posts)Three things we tried to get them to accept: "Don't let ANYONE tell you what to think, don't let ANYONE tell you what you like, and fight like hell to find a job that pays you to do something you want to be doing."
They both live by those guidelines now, and we couldn't be happier.

Thanks for sharing this great photo.

(54,302 posts)On the way back to New York tomorrow, she planned a layover on the way from München. She is flying to Düsseldorf with a 5 hour layover here, and then catching the evening flight back to New York so she can have lunch with us.
They both had the good sense to catch a good portion of my wife's genes. Smart move indeed!

Have a great lunch with her.

(54,302 posts)When in law school, the younger one was told it was expected of the law student to clerk with some judge or intern with a law firm during the summer. This was during the Cheneybush recession, and few interesting positions were being offered, and even then mostly to Harvard and Yale Law students. Normal mortals need not apply. So she applied to, and was accepted by the U.N. War Crimes Commission in Sierra Leone, and went there (!!!!!) for the summer. Nearly died from some horrible infection, came back, pronounced Africa "cool," and did a solo (!!!!) trip through Tanzania and Kenya a couple of years later. Boyfriends who are less than fearless need not apply, needless to say!

(54,302 posts)There were the usual tears, crises and moments of rapid aging, like with anyone who tries to raise children on their own.
But we put our hearts and lives into them, and reaped the reward we hoped to get. That's about as good as anyone can hope for, I think.

(53,339 posts)Okay, true admission, I have never been to an Octoberfest or any kind of beer festival. A character flaw on my part, I know.
But it's wonderful to see your lovely and professionally talented daughters having fun together. You're obviously proud of them. Who wouldn't be?

(54,302 posts)We're pretty happy with how they turned out. They're smart, funny, and self-assured. They would go to the ends of the earth for each other, too. When I think how many children of rich people we know back in Dallas have turned out (i.e. less than ideally, to put it mildly), we're content to have put two people in the world that make it a better place.

(54,302 posts)Of course, with a Mama like my wife, they were either gonna be lookers or have beards like me. They wisely opted for Door Number 1.
The Oktoberfest sort of ushers in October
I think its original purpose was to make people forget that summer was over once and for all.

(8,747 posts)Strongly favor your wife. The one on the left more so. But that is just one picture. So I could be wrong.

(54,302 posts)The one on the left, the younger one, favors my side of the family. The one on the right favors my wife's side more strongly.
The elder one was just here for a few hours on her way back to New York. She said she and her sister were constantly being mistaken for being in their early twenties, which pleased her plenty (they are both over 30).

(54,302 posts)I never won a raffle or a lottery or got any kind of a break with my artistic endeavors, but with my 3 "fabulous females"--that description was provided by none other than Stan Lee----I hit the one jackpot that life only hands out on the rarest of occasions. I am not dense enough to have overlooked that.
