Diving in Costa Rica

1. I was snorkeling off a place called Marion Bay in South Australia 40 years ago

and a huge ray picked itself up from the bottom and, with a flick of its fins, disappeared from view.

A truly beautiful, elegant creature. Just stunning.

I'd seen plenty of smaller ones. But this one with its size and power...

3. They really are majestic

We dove with Manta Rays in Hawaii - spectacular!

What was most beautiful about this one is that it was completely unexpected (the Manta Rays we were expecting)

2. I barely got flicked on my baby toe by one

damn painful for a couple of hours - up there with the worst painI have ever felt and I get stung regularly by bees, wasps, scorpions, and harvester ants.

4. I was in a 5 mm wetsuit

including booties and gloves so I wasn't too concerned but the guys diving in bathing suits - I'll pass!
