(54,256 posts)At some point the term "Oriental" became non PC.
Now it's "Asian".
I don't understand why.
Please educate me.
Many thanks

(18,238 posts)Solely on their geographical orientation in the world relative to a western (European) center.

(53,061 posts)1) Oriental. Oriental is an academic term that originated in British studies that divided the world roughly at the Suez Canal with everyone east being Orientals and everyone on the west being Occidentals. In the US it eventually became a polite term for people that didnt want to use words like Jap but was replaced by "Asian".
2) The word Asian does not exist naturally in any Asian country. If you take these 5 countries in SE Asia: Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam there is virtually no linguistic or cultural overlap. We are not talking about the difference between language difference between French, English and Portuguese but more like differences between Earth and Jupiter.
The vocabulary, structure, sound, tone, written systems, are 100% different. Thai and Vietnamese are tonal languages but completely different tones. Cambodian, Malay and Burmese are none tonal but completely different. They basically do not share a single word with the possible exception of the word for tea = Chai. A word that tries to melt all of these very distinct cultures into one word simply doesn't make any sense to the people in those countries as they see huge differences between the countries and because of the geography has never sustained the kind of travel back and forth that Europe, for example, has experienced for hundreds of years. People in these various countries simply don't identify with each other.
However each of these languages have a single word for Westerner in each of their own languages. Farang (Thai) Gweilo (Chinese) Gaijin (Japanese) Barang (Cambodian) Mat Salleh (Malay).
These words would include everybody from Russia to Brazil to the US to France. Just like Asians dont have an indigenous word for Asia that is commonly used we dont have the equivalent word for all of those that peoples although we will use Westerner as a default.
When you use the word Asian it is not an insult but just doesnt sound right. It would be like calling you North American. Having said that the word Asia isnt the first preference that people would use but has become common and is now used as an adopted word in all languages and nothing is thought of saying lets try and get some Asian Cuisine. Most people would prefer to be correctly identified by their national identity (Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai) just like you would prefer to be called American rather than Occidental, Westerner, or North American.

(41,831 posts)I call myself an Asian American, and so can the rest of the Population that don't know me as Japanese or Hawaiian.
