Huffington Post pissed me off for the last time this morning.
As those of you who frequent the site know, most pages open with an "autoplay" video that often begins with a blast of loud music. Not as much of a problem in the middle of the day if you are at home. Anywhere else, it's a supreme annoyance.
Get the extension here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/disable-html5-autoplay/efdhoaajjjgckpbkoglidkeendpkolai
What happens after you install it is that the video player loads on the page and then stops, displaying the "play" button, rather than autoplaying.
If for some reason you decide that you DO want videos to autoplay on a specific page, simply click the extension button and change the default "Disable Autoplay" to "Disable Nothing."

(12,148 posts)I don't use Chrome but Mozilla based SeaMonkey. You inspired me to search again for how to stop video auto play. It is now available in Fire Fox and Sea Monkey. Type <about:config> take the risk, type media.autoplay in the search bar, double click to change from true to false.
media.autoplay.enabled;true
media.autoplay.enabled;false

(12,148 posts)so I don't do videos. DU is good because embedded videos don't auto-play, but lots of other sites are not nice.

(17,090 posts)You're doing a real service here, Miles Archer. Thanks for sharing this.
Like you, I detest those annoying and loud auto-play videos, particularly on espn.com
And on some sites they reduce the size of the video screen so you have to scroll up and down looking for where the hell the blaring audio is coming from.
I'm going to really appreciate that Chrome extension!

(10,345 posts)I block JavaScript, flash, and images on most sites but I had no way to fight the new html5 plague.
So thanks for this!

(18,837 posts)If you have this, plus (depending on your operating system and browser, I use Chrome in Windows 10):
AdBlock Plus
uBlock Origin
FB Purity (for Facebook users, blocks ads and lets you remove page elements like "suggested games" or anything else that annoys you)
...you are good to go with a Swiss Army Knife of protection.
SOME Websites write code to get around the ad blockers. If you do a Google search on the specific site, you'll find multiple examples of custom code you can add to either uBlock Origin or AdBlock plus that will resolve the issue.
