(11,686 posts)Then again I worked for them in the past. Of course I was the Lady Liberty waver but hey. The Liberty tax preparers are trained longer and more extensively than H&R BLOCK preparers.

(57,379 posts)I know, I have until tomorrow. I wanted to have everything away, so that I'd have 96 hours to remember that one thing that I had forgotten. So far, I haven't remembered anything.
I didn't get some needed forms until the end of March. One consolidated 1099-DIV didn't come in until March 27.
Last year, the same outfit issued its final revised 1099-DIV on August 29, over four months after tax day. It has issued earlier versions early enough for me to do my taxes.

(108 posts)I have bare minimum deducted from my pension. Spouse receives social security and has no taxes taken out. I can't get him to retire from his job so we are having to cough up an additional five figures in addition to his work with holding. I put off filing as long as possible, so will be mailing it in tomorrow. Golf cart rental fees for secret service have to come from somewhere.

(17,427 posts)I plan each year to owe a bit and this was true this year. I usually hold them until near the due date and send in with my check. I went ahead and mailed them in early because the bank pays stupidly low interest and I might forget them.
BUT, over the last four months I've been working on 2013 through 2016 returns for a self employed relative. For reasons he is unable to explain, he just quit doing them. I started with tubs of receipts and statements plus a Quick Books file which I can describe (with great charity) as untidy and incomplete. It took well over 200 hours to sort this out. I've been done about a month, so the brain dead seems to be going away.
So I can say, YES, I've filed taxes, and taxes, and taxes, and ...

(6,261 posts)I was going to be done exceptionally early this year too, almost a week, when I tried importing final data from a financial institution and Turbotax popped up a message: "Turbotax can't handle more then 3,000 transactions. Go to turbotax.com for a refund and fuck you."
Bloody Hell! What's a mere 3,000 transactions to a modern computer? And this is the top of the line version of Turbotax already.
What a pain.

(12,646 posts)Why wait and maybe forget and actually owe something? As it was, I didn't owe anything, and got very little back anyway, because I review my taxes and fiddle with exemptions every quarter just to make sure I get more in my paycheck. Having a CAC-enabled HR portal to do everything paperless and provide digital signatures really helps.

(7,524 posts)If you're confused at all, don't be afraid to consult the IRS. It's always better to keep in touch with them if anything is awry. They can help you work out payments if necessary.

I applied and tested for an IRS job (the people who answer these phones, basically) and learned they're not vindictively out to get you, but the worst thing to do is wait too long before notifying them what's up; they will patiently get their money with your help or without. My neighbor is having hard times and was too scared to call about money she owed in back taxes. Then she deposited a check in her bank which was garnished 100%. I made her call them to ask if they could work out a a less severe garnishment (there was nothing else they could do worse) and someone helped her work it out pretty much immediately.
If I remember correctly, I think Turbo Tax has a part near the end where they offer to help you file an extension.

(6,907 posts)It will say you have to send in estimate of payment but just send in the form anyway. That will give you until October. They will charge you a late fee, but it is better than fee for not filing on time.
You can get the extension form at irs.gov
