(111,237 posts)but it won't happen in my lifetime. The closest I've come is tramadol, the side effect being SSRI syndrome. At least it doesn't put me in a fog like natural opiates do.
Until they develop something better, opiates remain much safer than non opiate drugs. The problem is that they produce dependence over time and require increased dosages to accomplish relief for people who need them around the clock.

(63,221 posts)very painful broken arm I broke out in hives all over my body and was projectile vomiting. It was miserable. I had to go off them immediately and they prescribed tramadol instead but there was the danger of it interacting w/ my SSNRI medication. It actually did very little for the pain and still made me feel kind of nauseated, so I didn't really take it that much.
The only thing that really helped was ice packs and ibuprofen, but it makes me nervous about the next time if and when I have to go through something extremely painful, especially if it is something internal that ice won't work on.
