My inbox is getting FLOODED with advertisements to buy gifts for Father's Day and graduates. I mean one was advertising a $2500 Surface laptop. Come on! My laptop I just bought was $1500, that is fucking insane. And then there was some jewelry chain that was selling a $6500 necklace. Seriously? What do they think constitutes as a "graduation gift" anymore? Or a father's day gift? Or a mother's day gift? Or any kind of gift? I've never got anything that nice! Seriously!

(152 posts)Half the malls in America will probably be out of business in a couple of years; everytime you turn around another major chain is closing it's doors.

(13,461 posts)I keep wondering that myself? Who are they advertising to? Certainly not anyone I know.

(100,063 posts)I just got one advertising front row concert tickets. I've been to tons of concerts, I have *NEVER* sat in the front row, even for some of my favorite bands. It's insanity.

If you tell your credit card company they can't sell your name, they won't do it. In other words - opt out whenever possible. I stopped getting a lot of spam emails when I started doing that.
Whenever you get spam emails, immediately "unsubscribe" and they have to take you off their list.
Just sayin'

The dollar value of my gifts is small. On the other hand I completely paid for college for both my daughters (less some scholarship aid they received).
No jewelry. Target level clothes. $25 smartphone.
I do spend a fortune on my pets though.
I got my mother/wife/MIL flowers for Mother's Day. My wife and I don't buy large gifts for each other. Hand written notes, flowers, and occasional treat like a local theater production.

(100,063 posts)I just bought one a few weeks ago. I typically try to stay in the $1,000 - $1,500 range. I keep my desktop PCs for 3 - 4 years before I have to upgrade, but I would never spend $3,000 or more for something like that, and I definitely wouldn't spend that kind of money as a gift.

No idea if that is still true, but my guess is that yes it is in some cases.
