The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI swore I'd never do it, but I put someone on ignore.
Since joining in 2002 (before there was an "ignore" feature) up until just now, I have never ignored anyone.
Not even our long-term trolls.
I finally pushed that button, though.
Actually, not because of anything I found particularly offensive.
It was actually something in their sig line that I found just over the top grotesque.
I really didn't want to do it, I'm not saying the poster is a bad person.
It's me, I'm just squeamish. I'm wimpy. It's all about me and my DU experience.
It was also something I never anticipated.
Apologies if this is meta or drama, it's not meant to be.
It's not about anger or conflict. I just finally found a use for the "ignore" feature, which I never thought I would.

(27,084 posts)It's about imagery in their sig line.
I just find it gross, and I kept coming across it.

(19,459 posts)It still lets me see their posts, though. I check the list about once a month, to see who has been served a pizza.
It's one way I have of keeping an eye on suspected trolls/sock puppets.

(36,833 posts)Most of the people I have on ignore are, well, arseholes (even though we agree on numerous topics). I would shun them in real life, as well. Some people are just toxic.

(17,296 posts)just seems so much more civilized than asshole, doesn't it? Sort of a folksy charm to arsehole.

(27,084 posts)Or can I choose individual DUers?
I don't think I want to block everyone's.

(34,133 posts)In signature lines. Over the past few years, there were a few sig line images I didn't want to see and I found I could block them that way.
Right now I use Ublock for Firefox and all I have to do is right click the image and "Block element" is one of the choices. There are a couple of more steps to it, but it is not hard.

(90,762 posts)I was only teasing you.
I broke down and blocked a few people and I recently checked and they were all flagged for review, and seems they have been for months - so I unblocked them. lol

(28,246 posts)You're bound to encounter posters who are so obnoxious or hateful that they need to be eliminated from sight and mind. I didn't use my Ignore capability much here at DU---until the last presidential campaign. Zero regrets, on my part.

(23,623 posts)There were just some people I just did not want showing up. They raised my ire just seeing their name in a thread. Since then just a couple more have been added. For no particular reason other than what they post just doesn't interest me.

(7,808 posts)I just got tired of seeing them over and over and over, especially the gifs. What's wrong with just an unobtrusive but clever one-liner?

I remember there was a very brief period here when we could see the ignore lists. It was maybe 2005 or 2006. I was posting plenty in the Election Reform forum, which was quite heated. The hilarity was when those ignore lists were viewable the trend was unmistakable. Posters who were most adamant about stolen votes and flipped elections were putting the handful of people who took the opposite view on ignore. One ignore list resembled another. Hilarious. Group frailty.
Then during the 2008 primaries and the Obama/Hillary debate some of the most ardent Obama supporters were passing out ignore lists, ones that listed all the major Hillary supporters. Talk about pathetic. Many great DUers left and never returned. This site is excellent except during primaries, from what I've seen and experienced.
I'm sure I'm on plenty of ignore lists, even though my participation has dropped sharply since 2008. My dad told me at an early age that I was an original thinker, which would prompt lots of praise but also quite a bit of opposition, since conventional wisdom is so popular, especially among groups. He was exactly correct.

(180 posts)I ignore all posts with Videos. It doesn't matter how interesting the subject seems to be, I am often confused and lost by their content. In fact, I would turn off all the pictures and the gifs if I could
