My daughter's gift to me for Fathers Day:

23 and me DNA test. I haven't got it yet, but will very interested to see
the results. I presently believe my heritage to be one half Irish, three
eighths English and one eighth Crow Indian.
She's a great daughter.

I did Ancestry's DNA test last summer and there were big surprises in the results. Additionally, two cousins I never knew about have found me. I am very happy with the results.

As far as I've been able to trace the family tree I know where the parents of 3 out of 4 of my grandparents immigrated from, so I know approximately:

from grandparent 1: I'm 1/8 Irish, 1/8 English,
from grandparent 2: I'm 1/4 Norwegian
from grandparent 3: I'm 1/8 French, 1/8 West African by way of Haiti
from grandparent 4: I'm 1/4 unknown but possibly with some Slavic roots.

And it's been enormously helpful. We're on the cusp of "personalized medicine," which will be quite a revolution in healthcare.

The doctor I was seeing at the time for hypothyroidism had learned that there was a connection between hypothyroidism and a genetic mutation, and he had all his thyroid patients tested for the MTHFR genetic mutation. I had never heard of all this, but once I started researching that, I began to wonder if I had other genetic mutations, so I ordered the 23andMe test.

I have plenty of mutations. I suppose we all do. At the time, 23andMe was still under FDA restrictions that prevented it from doing anything but giving raw results, so I and others had to go to some of the other services to get health profiles. They are now able to provide health profiles, but I don't know the details.

As I said, we probably all have mutations and they may not be an issue for us. But for at least some of us those mutations can reach a point -- who knows why? -- where they turn problematic. A number of mine have, and while I've not been able to solve the various dilemmas involved, a couple of the health profiles I obtained were at least able to provide advice like "get more of this, don't consume that." No Vitamin E (supplementation), no coffee, no green tea, no turmeric, more magnesium, more selenium, more NAC, more DIM, zinc, and so forth. Very, very helpful.

They also provide you with information about what propensities you have - heart disease, cholesterol, obesity, and many, many others, which can be helpful for especially conscientious people to help monitor and guide their health.

It really is a remarkable tool. The ancestry part is interesting, but the health part is essential for some of us.

While 23 & Me gives a lot of health info, I thought Ancestry.com's lineage information was presented better and with more detail. Regardless, whether 23 & Me or Ancestry .com, it's great information to have.

I would have sworn I was 50% Italian, 25% Irish and 25% Great Britain.

50% Italian because my paternal grandparents immigrated from Italy.
25% Irish because my maternal grandfathers parents immigrated from Ireland.
25% GB because my maternal ancestors came over in the 1600's from England.

Ended up:
36% Great Britain
25% Italy
11% Ireland

Then a mix of Central and southern European even a little Scandinavian. Lots of co mingling went on back in the day.

Hope you get as much of a kick out of your results as I did.

How much does it cost? I would like to get it done if it's not too expensive.

I have always assumed I was 50% Italian (paternal g-parents from Italy), 25% English and 25% Dutch. But the more I find out, I have learned that there was an Irish great-g-mother on the English side, some Swedish blood on the Dutch side and my Italian grandfather is from a town in Italy (Barile) that is an ancient Arbereshe settlement, that was populated by Albanians in the late 1400's and have since mixed w/ Italians, but retain many ties to the Albanian culture. There was also a large Greek population in the town around that time as well.
