Loved it. Good acting and story, well filmed, well paced. Relevant and inspiring without being sappy. And yes, awesome to see a movie about a female superhero. Not too violent. If you think this is a movie that might be of any interest it's worth checking out.

Terrific film from start to finish. Gal Gadot is a miracle of casting.
And welcome to DU!

One hopes that she gets future roles worthy of her demonstrated talent.
Much has been said about Gadot's beauty and, yes, she's preposterously gorgeous. But the power of her onscreen presence comes in her subtlety of facial expression, her body language, and her inflection. A remarkably nuanced performance.
Also, she kicks ass with the sword and shield!

Gal can act, though.

(5,914 posts)She's a good actress, but she also projects a tremendous confidence yet LIKEABILITY that I don't think you can really "act". You either have that quality or you don't. People find it very attractive, and obviously, I think she has it in spades.
I'm sure it was why, like Reeve, she was given the role, despite being a relative unknown and thousands of people trying out for that part.

For me, when discussing actors who've portrayed Superman, it's always "Christopher Reeve and a bunch of other guys."
I feel like Gadot has gone a long way toward establishing herself as similarly iconic.
Christopher Reeve was one of the most beautiful humans ever, but he also had a winning smile and a self-effacing manner that were adorable.

(7,820 posts)She fights. I will say, at its heart, the movie is very anti-war while dealing with the fact that humanity is messy and capable of incredible good and evil. (I don't think that's too spoilery)

Make no mistake about it: She's still all about truth and courage and strength through love.
I loved this movie, and I was absolutely fed up with superhero films. This is the first one in decades that actually has a heart to it.
You are actually emotionally invested in the main character and what they are trying to do. What a concept.

That said, while it was not a great movie, I thought Dawn of Justice was a step up from Man of Steel. Of course, after seeing all the horrible reviews for Dawn of Justice, I went in with my expectations somewhere below the basement.

For various reasons (chiefly my disappointment at Man of Steel), I went into Dawn of Justice with very low expectations. I figured that as long as the actual Batman/Superman fight was cool, and the Batman/Russian ass-kicking was cool, I'd be satisfied. To that end, mission accomplished.
Gadot was an unexpected and welcome bonus. Also, it must be said plainly that she had the hardest role. After six Superman movies and seven Batman films, everyone is intimately familiar with those two characters. But (with all due respect to Lynda Carter) Wonder Woman was largely unknown, so Gadot's character had to hit the ground running, and did she ever!
If DC has any sense, they'll double her paycheck and immediately make her the "face" of their cinematic universe.

(17,862 posts)the Batman v. Superman fight. I think it failed on all fronts. The Dark Knight Returns comic had 30 years of relationship building to that fight. Same can be said for the years of fighting together as a team for Tony Stark and Steve Rodgers in the equivalent scene in Civil War.
Orrex
(63,172 posts)and you're exactly correct that Dawn of Justice lacks the emotional baggage of TDKR.
However, I deliberately opted to view it as the film version of that comic's fight scene, rather than as part of the cinematic garbage fest. So, while admit that this is cheating, it still satisfied the kid in me who bought issue 4 at Waldenbooks!

You are right that it was a great set piece battle in how to take down a Kryptonian.

I just read that she was paid an insultingly tiny $300,000 for anchoring the only good film so far in the DC cinematic universe. As such, they should quintuple her paycheck at the very least, considering that Henry Cavill got $14 million for his boring-as-a-corpse performance in Man of Steel.

(56,828 posts)and didn't include any bonuses/incentives. Chris Evans also got $300,000 base salary for the first Capt America and Chris Hemsworth $200,000 base for the first Thor.

(56,828 posts)There is a huge problem in Hollywood with the pay gap for women. However, it does not seem like that's the case in this situation. Of course, if we later find out that Gadot's percentage of the gross is only half that of Henry Cavill for Man of Steel, then people can make a legitimate case for discrimination.
I'm not counting Ben Affleck since he's been an established Hollywood celebrity since the 1990s. (Granted, Afflect is not a great actor, but he's proven himself an excellent director and has been a headliner in some big movies in the past - Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, etc)

(63,172 posts)I found this helpful graphic on reddit, of all places, from a person who appears to have done some disturbingly thorough research:
I haven't seen a similar chart for Gadot, though admittedly she probably had fewer than a dozen lines in Dawn of Justice. Still, ol' Hank got millions and millions for reciting a handful of words and posing in his blue suit for two movies that no one likes.
Gadot knocked it out of the park and engaged in actual conversational dialog and onscreen chemistry. Her agent better add a few zeros in front of the decimal the next time around.

(5,914 posts)Is like saying that vomiting is a step up from diarrhea.
I hated, hated, hated Batman vs. Superman. The ONLY redeeming thing in it were the few minutes that Wonder Woman was around. I was depressed when I found out they were giving her a whole movie, because I absolutely KNEW they were going to fuck it up yet again.
But they didn't. By the gods, they actually got it right this time.
Before Wonder Woman premiered I posted this on my FB page:

(56,828 posts)the humor when Pine and Gadot first met, and then when they were in London really helped, as well Lucy Davis as Etta. Instead of the typical "grim and dark" DC movies we had previously, those three helped make it much more enjoyable.

When Wonder Woman has her "reveal" in this movie, it's something special. And it should be. She's a goddamn SUPERHERO, for crying out loud.

(17,862 posts)but I would be reluctant to put it in the top tier. It sets the stage wonderfully like other origin movies (Spider-Man I, X-Men I, Batman Begins).
Good casting. A problem the DCEU has with its other characters (Cavill as Superman and Eisenberg as Luthor being the two biggest problems).
Great origin script true to the spirit of the original story.
