(16,296 posts)You know those American Spirit cigs are actually worse than other cigs, they pack more tobacco in them, a carton of them weigh more than a carton of 100s. Some researcher that tested a bunch of brands also found more freebase nic in them than other brands*.

(29,642 posts)the observation that the smoke from back in the day, say, oh, about the 50's & 60's had a different smell then the smoke of today. He has said that the chemicals they put in cigarettes now days, to keep people "hooked" is a lot more then the natural tobacco of yesteryear. When people started to quit smoking the tobacco companies had to come up with chemicals to keep them on the cigs, and the smoke because of the that has changed as well.

(16,296 posts)So in the mid 60s they developed a cig with about 1/3 less tobacco in it, in order to deliver the same nicotine "punch" they figured out a way to freebase the nicotine using ammonia.
I don't know if they knew or didn't care, but the vaporous (freebased) nicotine was way more addictive because it was "spikey", it rose very quickly in the blood stream and then dropped off just as fast. After they started using this technique Malboros went from 16 or so to number one in sales. All the other tobacco companies followed them in short order.
The other main additives are things like sugar, licorice and vanilla, the sugar in particular makes the smoke smoother so the user can take larger puffs, more nicotine, quicker smoke.
They also put stuff in the tobacco and sprayed on the paper that keeps the cig burning but nonetheless it's the tobacco smoke that's loaded with carcinogens etc.
So it's true that cigs before '65 were a lot different, they were much harsher because of the lack of additives and even though they contained more tobacco, did not deliver as much of the highly addictive freebase nicotine.
