American that went into weight loss and how little calories one needs at my age. Only 1200 to 1400 a day. Woke me up. So i skipped dessert, bought a scale and will make two lite meals a day my thing. With allowance for treating myself once or twice a week. I'll stay away from carbs and sugars. I already found a place that makes really good prepared salad at a salad bar. I've stayed away from salads of late because i don't like the taste of salad dressing anymore but these salad bar salads have one ingredient dressing like 'apple cider vinegar' and I really enjoy them. I eat within the 5 hour time frame and find it easy enough so far. Thanks to all the encouragement and advice from Duers over the last 6 months. I am an emotional eater due to ptsd and an ex smoker. I finally have a diet that I enjoy going on.

(149,525 posts)And that is the secret of success!
You have to change how you live and enjoying what you eat as long as it's healthy is key to your success.
I hope this will continue to work for you. I know you've struggled.

(21,646 posts)I have been lucky in my lifetime to have worked near places with fabulous salad bars . Right now it's not the case and I miss them for lunch. Pig out on all the veggies they are good for you ( up to a point: )

(32,641 posts)I'm doing the 2/5 fast. Much easier than I thought it would be. Not doing it to lose weight, but I have.

(3,818 posts)and seemed to have plateaued but I tend to eat more carbs than I should. I found when I cut back on the carbs and added a walking/jogging/running combo of 2-4 miles, three to five times a week the weight really started coming off again.

(36,818 posts)If you aren't using a scale even if you are trying to make an educated guess you can easily be off by 500 calories per day which can make all the difference between losing weight and not losing weight.
The problem with carbohydrates and especially simple carbohydrates is they tend to be calorie dense yet are too quickly metabolized by the body, so you are hungry again too soon after eating them. Some people go to the extreme of trying to cut them out entirely, but I think it's a better long term strategy to learn how to balance them better with fats and protein and the number of calories you need for your activity level.

I am just finishing up a year with this program and I have to say I really liked it. It is based on creating new habits and even as much of a slacker as I am I have made some real lasting changes in the past year, and lost a big chunk of weight that has stayed off for 6 months so far. I am thinking of doing it again as I would like to lose some more and I certainly didn't master all the habits yet, so hoping to maybe do a "little bit better," as is one of the mantras.

(15,408 posts)do you only eat during 5 hours of the day? Or 5 hours between meals? I'm confused.

(118,492 posts)outside that timeframe. You drink coffee or tea with no milk or sugar or sweetenner, or water when you need it the rest of the time. I'm staying off carbs and sugar, or trying to. No bread in the house. I do treat myself with the healthiest of restaurant meals at times.. You can eat pretty healthy normally within the timeframe. Point is it is a fast while you are sleeping. Two meals. And i don't find myself starving at all. Just a tiny bit of hunger to remind myself I care about my health. I got it from a friend but I bet they have more information online.
