I think I was (treated?) by an optometrist. I met my match for *grouchy*!1

O.K., I did a Google on "optometrist" because I was going to start this here with, "Are those eye dudes real doctors?!1" which would probably have led to a raining of stuff on my head. O.K., excuse me, but I've had maybe *two* eye exams in my life that I can remember, the poking in the eye thing, the eye chart, so I'm coming from a place of ignorance.

So the assistant did all the preliminary tests, was sort of cold to the point of “curt”. She ended by putting the blurry (dilating) drops in and put me in a waiting area for them to kick in. So the place was empty and this dude (the doctor?) walked past a couple of times before eventually calling me in. I had broken the ice a tiny bit with the woman and had made her laugh with my usual answer to “how are you”: Short, fat, and old. So I thought it would work with him, too.

So I said to his opening question, “Short, fat, and old,” and he said, “There’s nothing I can do about that.” And it all went downhill from there. He looked like the Trey GOWDY, the Grand Inquisitor who went after Hillary and Benghazi
even down to the wearing of a suit:

He said that the results so far were not anything big, that he would be directing bifocals and vitamins and for me to work my magic (my smartass re-telling here) to manage the diabetes. But he did a couple of more little tests, arm waving for eyes to follow, then looking through some lenses, for me to look at his jaw while he looked into my eye. And when I slipped up by natural reflex and looked at the ceiling one second, he practically yelled, “Sir, I can’t see your eye if you’re looking UP!”

O.K., O.K., so when I volunteered that some side effect of something might have affected the diabetes, he said, “Talk to your doctor about that!”

Then he said that for me to get the glasses I had to go to the other clinic, like it was a big deal. I asked whether he was setting up an appointment, and he snapped, “No, no, you just walk in. They don’t do appointments for this.” I said I was just trying to figure out what I was supposed to do. He asked whether I had ever gone to an optometry place before, where you pick out what frames you want. I said I’d passed through and tried on frames for kicks a time or two. He said that this is what it’s about, that I would pick the frames and the other place would grind up the lenses to fit. Then he was typing, and I asked something and he said, “I canNOT type while you’re talking to me! I can’t do two things at once!”

I decided to close myself down and stop all interaction. So I said nothing at all to his closing “pleasantries”. He noticed and tried to make up the way perpetrators do when they’re caught. I just breezed my way out.

***********Alw-RIGHTY then!1 I've heard that some occupations have high rates of depression and suicide. Anybody care to clue me in whether this is one of them or whether I just drew a clinker?!1

Drop him and find a good opthalmologist. You need better, in several senses. WinkyDink Jun 2017 #20
I agree, you'd do better with an ophthalmologist. Rhiannon12866 Jun 2017 #21

but most of eye docs have been good people. My latest one is professional, concise and straight forward. Examined me, looked at my test results, glasses done.

Find another.

The other assistant outside at the front desk was also wearing a flashy suit, looked like he was in his 60s (I'm 70), and seemed to know what had happened in there, from the way he seemed to be smoothing things over.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't run away.

The guy at the front desk in the flashy suit knows he's a danger !!

Or he may have burn out or just be a jerk. We normally don't really know what's going on in a strangers life really.

FWIW Since you mentioned that you're a diabetic may I suggest you try to go to an ophthalmologist in the future if you can (I do because my MS causes optic neurosis). An optometrist is great for some things and has a lot of training but for someone who has health issues that make them prone to issues with their eyes the MD of the eye world is IME the best way to go plus they're more likely covered by insurance because of your health issues. If it relates to your eye health, they could have answered your question about a side effect affecting diabetes.

Hopefully you'll find someone easier to deal with in the future or, if you go back to him, he's having a better day.

I've encountered much more grouchy behavior from my retinologists (ophthalmologists who are retina specialists), but they're usually dealing with stressed patients with serious eye problems.

Maybe that guy had some recent personal issues?

Edit: I just saw the post that says he's an ophthalmologist. Yeah, they can be grouchy in my experience.

Hopefully you're in an area where you have a wide variety of choices, like I do. I really like my optometrist and I'm overdue to see him. I won't put up with doctors who are nasty. Blunt while explaining things, ok, but nasty, no.

If this guy suggested you talk with a doctor, an ophthalmologist would be a better option. And it wasn't you, this guy sounds like he has an attitude problem. No wonder the place was empty. When my grandmother was in the hospital once, she encountered a doctor like that, rude and insulting. When it came to follow up, we convinced her to see anybody else. Nobody needs to be treated like that and I'm sorry you got a real clinker!

But delivery is eveything. He sounds like an ass, and I'm sure that it soured the whole (already unpleasant) experience.
