I've heard of cats and dogs who like peanut butter, olives, breakfast cereal, and other things that you wouldn't expect them to like. What surprising foods did your pet (or friend's pet) like?
I had a cat who loooooved mushroom soup. It was so bad that I couldn't open a can of anything without him running over trying to get some.
I had another cat who loved seaweed. When I lived in Japan, I once got a package of the thin flat sheets for making sushi. I left it on the counter and went to work. When I got home, I found the package torn open, most of the seaweed chewed out of it, and thousands of tiny bits of seaweed stuck into the tatami mats with cat spit. I was still finding tiny specks of it months later.

(813 posts)and I have a cat who will roll around in it and smell it like it's catnip. When I open a new container of ground coffee she is right there to stick her nose in the container to smell it. Also hoping I'll spill some!

(9,265 posts)The late Ricky, my Maine Coon, loved sweets. If you were eating a donut or muffin he HAD to have a bite. Angel food cake was a special weakness. Once I bought one and the next morning found it on the kitchen floor with the wrapper chewed open. I think he was attracted by the almond extract.
Another cat we had loved green olives. He didn't eat them but would rub his cheeks on a cutting board if I'd sliced olives on it.

My cat likes tuna water (not the tuna), chicken water (not the chicken), mackerel juice (not the mackerel),
salmon juice (not the salmon), chicken and beef broth.

(205,237 posts)I went through a period years ago when that's all I felt like eating. And if I had some on the stove, she'd wait, wouldn't eat her dinner until I put some in her dish.

(34,136 posts)But previous cats I shared an abode with loved potato chips. One would come running as soon as he heard a rustley plastic bag being handled. Even if I was only unloading groceries she would hassle me until I opened a bag and gave her some chips. She really loved cheddar wavy chips, crunched away at them and licked all the crumbs up off the floor.
If the bag she heard was NOT potato chips, I got no peace. One day she picked on me until I went back to the store to buy her some chips since I had not purchased any on my first grocery run and had none in the house.
A roommate had a cat that loved mushrooms. She liked pizza with mushrooms and Canadian bacon. The cat would ignore the bacon and eat all the mushrooms off any unattended slice of pizza. We never did figure that out.

(62,410 posts)We also had a Siamese cat that lived to 22. She survived the last year eating mostly Italian sausage with a bit of cheese.

(3,447 posts)Ferrets! Two!
Alrighty, here are their 'odd' likes:
Ferret 1: Beautiful male Sable Mitt 2.5 year old, 'The Lord Tooth'
French fries
Peanut butter (more than anything in the world other than Furo-Vite, the famous ferret pet treat/reward paste)
Canola oil (!)
Potato chips
Cheese, crumbly solid
Soy milk, Very Vanilla
Rubber. As in the bottom of your shoes. Shoes must be kept off the ground or they will be ETTEN!
Foam (think packaging peanuts and swimming pool noodles)
Soap. Tooth becomes upset if he does not get to lick the soap AT LEAST twice a day and will let you know by pooing in front of the tub
Ferret 2: Beautiful female Striped White 1.5 year old, 'Honks' (literally the most talkative ferret who ever lived!)
SUGAR! SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR!
Lettuce. She seriously thinks she's a rabbit. Hide yer salad.
Canola Oil
Nitrate meats (hot dogs and like those little Buddig Meat packs)
Pump cheese for nachos
Soy milk, Very Vanilla. Much worse for it than Tooth, too.
Cough drops. No idea.
Keeping these two mostly cage-free is an exercise in patience and attention, and a whole lot of love. And I wouldn't give them up for anyone! Thankfully my bf really loves them too (and wants to get more if we can get a bigger house, yay!).
Codeine
(25,586 posts)My wife and kids want a ferret but I've been told they smell pretty awful. True?
Shandris
(3,447 posts)...only the tiniest, tiniest amount. As in 'Yah, one Wallflower and keeping the cage clean and it's literally undetectable'. Now, I've heard that some other owners have problems, but again that's just online talk and my experience has not been very much like the online talk. My vet has no other ferrets for comparison, though...apparently I'm the only one in my city who has them.

(25,586 posts)or the cat will rip open the bags and eat himself sick while we are asleep. We call him the Apex Breadator.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,681 posts)"Apex Breadator" I couldn't leave bread out on the counter or he'd tear open the plastic bag and chew off the crusts. I never understood what he was so fond of bread. The other thing he really liked was corn husks. Not the corn itself, just the husks. If I brought home fresh sweet corn he'd come running when I husked it and would beg for husks to chew on.
Hassin Bin Sober
(26,325 posts)Don't know if that is considered weird.
We started feeding her sweet potatoes to get her diarrhea under control. We didn't realize she was allergic to grains the first six years of her life.
On again off again. We could never quite figure out what the problem was. Several trips to the vet and several different medicines. Then she got really sick and we thought we were going to lose her.
Sweet potatoes were the miracle food for her. AND she now gets excited for her dinner. She does "the dinner dance" when we are preparing the sweet potatoes.
She's 14 now and gives the neighbor's puppy a run for the money when they play.
CottonBear
(21,596 posts)She enjoys a tiny cheddar cheese 🧀 snack every morning. She knows the sound of the plastic cheese wrapper being opened!
She also enjoys steamed veggies and goldfish crackers.

Spaghetti, red sauce, white sauce

(22,034 posts)All he lives for is food. He'll eat anything except lettuce leaves but he will eat the crunchy stalks! If we have food, he sits quietly watching us intently waiting to see if he'll get any. If we walk into the kitchen, he immediately follows to see if the food is coming out. I believe that if he had unlimited food, he'd eat until he threw up then he'd eat that, too!
Meanwhile, our cat loves ice cream.
El Mimbreno
(777 posts)I've had cats who loved biscuits, melon, popcorn and onions (sauteed). Sophie will scan the kitchen flood for any dropped tidbits, hence the nickname "catfish".
A friend's German shepherd pup ate a dozen eggs, including the styro carton.
japple
(9,822 posts)loved cooked red bell pepper. She lived to be 20+/- years.
Lady the late, great, JR terrier loved potato chips and almost any other form of human food, but esp. potato chips.
Rocky and Rusty (niece's dogs who live next door) will eat anything and everything, but their favorite food is buttered cornbread.

(36,827 posts)Whenever a cricket would get inside the house she would hunt them down relentlessly and eat them.
Another dog I had would go absolutely nuts over popcorn. We had to switch to unsalted so we could give her a few out of each batch.

We had a part Siamese, who Loved to lick

(44,119 posts)Lab/pointer mix. Apple fixation is very strong. She comes running as soon as I pull an Apple out of the fridge, drooling like crazy.
We've made popcorn a game. She gets to have whatever I drop, but she's gotta sit quietly at the end of the bed. If I drop a kernel, I pick it up and throw it to her. She gets very intense watching me, seems like great mental stimulation for both of us, ha ha.
Loves coffee too, but of course I don't give her coffee. However she's been know to stick her tongue in my coffee cup if I'm not looking.
Great thread!

Unfortunately, our cat, Max, passed away a couple of years ago. I still think Noelle looks for him every once in awhile.

(22,062 posts)And anything else you're eating. The two Great Pyrenees will kill for Cheetos. My old gray mare will try to drink a 200 gallon water trough dry if it has a bit of bleach in it. Go figure.

(4,516 posts)favorite people food is sauerkraut. As soon as she smells it, she starts going nuts. The cat likes cereal (dry) cheerios and corn flakes are her favorites.

(9,888 posts)my cat loves is cat food. How anything can like that stuff is a mystery to me. Anyway, she likes dried out plant material. I grew her some lush grass and she wasn't interested. Old dried Christmas greens, yummy. About 20 years ago I grew sorghum and my mother has some of the long fronds in a big vase sitting in a corner. Ailish is up on a nearby table batting and trying to chew on them. She usually gets some, because she generally then throws them up.

(50,557 posts)We found out the cat liked hard rolls when she jumped up on the table, grabbed a hard roll in her mouth, jumped down and ate the whole thing.

(22,250 posts)He was going into the garden and taking big bites out of them on the vine . This same cat would come running every time I made popcorn; he was absolutely certain it was wonderful stuff, and would beg for it. Then when I gave it to him, he would look at it like "Not this S*^% again!!" Yet he never gave up hope that one of these days it would be something he liked.
I have also had 3 tuxedo cats over the years who all loved corn on the cob. They would take the cobs and hold them down with both paws and chew on them. We always gave them the cobs after we ate fresh corn. One of them would drag the cobs behind the furniture and stash them for later enjoyment.
Our current crop of cats are boring, dietarily speaking. None of them have any fun fetish foods. They are pretty much kibble kitties.

(5,591 posts)I had to take an emergency trip and left a kitten and bag of cat food with my stoner neighbor....when I came back he gave me back a plumper kitten and the whole bag of cat food - he said my kitten "very much preferred cheeseburgers over cat food"
for the rest of his life, that can went crazy and climbed all over me whenever I ate a cheeseburger
