I was asleep this morning, and was quite pleasantly awakened by a lightning bolt that probably alighted on some hapless tree a few yards from my residence. Probably about 50 more of these gems happened within a 15 minute period thereafter. Lots of rain. The frogs were choking and sending up the white flag. The driest frogs were manning the lifeboats!
Ah, next time I'll go outside with a golf club raised high above my head!
Seriously, they are kinda fun until one hits 10 feet from your house.

(1,451 posts)My brother-in-law and I were on the screened porch during a thunderstorm when lightning struck a tree about ten feet from us. I'm not sure our feet hit the ground on our way back into the house I miss Florida

(217 posts)I live in the Bay Area and the storms are insane. I've had lightning strike a tree in my yard, but the craziest was when it struck my pool cage. I don't think it was a primary strike, but my whole cage lit up and there was the craziest metallic snapping noise. My mother was in the house with me and both our jaws just dropped.
Just yesterday I was driving back from Tallahassee and watching the lightning strike on both sides of the interstate for a 45 minute stretch. It's just crazy to witness.

(60,010 posts)Almost every afternoon in the summer like clockwork the storms would hit. I have NEVER seen lightening like that, and it was "normal".
No bad results from it, but have sat thru 3 lightening storms here in Ala. that lifted the hair on my head, one direct strike to a tree outside the house, which also fried our telephone wires, including the connection in the wall inside.
Luckily I had unplugged the computer and other important things, because there was ample weather report warnings.
same storm managed to make a direct hit on the front of the road of the house across from me, and blew apart the water meter in the ground, left a wide hole, city had to patch it.
that sharp zzzzzzzzzizzle noise is very memorable.

(51,308 posts)I saw blue lightning. It was the strangest sight I've ever seen.
Quite pretty if I hadn't been so terrified at the time.

I do very much miss the old Florida

(6,602 posts)A few years ago, a bunch of my friends & I were at a party on Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta, when a lightning bolt struck & split a tree in half about 10 feet from us! Fortunately, no one was hurt. I'm sure they could have heard us screaming back in the city, though!
