Wife of comic book icon Stan Lee for nearly 70 years.

The pair, who met when the Marvel boss was supposed to take her friend on a date, were married for 69 years.

"I can confirm the sad news that Joan Lee passed away this morning quietly and surrounded by her family," a spokesperson for Stan Lee and his family said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "The family ask that you please give them time to grieve and respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Joan Lee suffered a stroke earlier in the week and was hospitalized, according to sources.

Stan loves to be the guy making nonstop wisecracks, but when he wants to, he drops the act, and the guy has a real heart of gold. A real "mensch," as they might say back in his old Brooklyn neighborhood. He never talked a lot about Joan, although he opened up a little about her when he heard that my wife was also from Europe. When we first met, he heard her accent for about 3 seconds and knew immediately.

He must be absolutely devastated. I sent him an email to his personal account, but he must have a few thousand messages on there by now, and I don't expect an answer any time in the near future. He always spoke of Joan in glowing terms, and I'm sure he meant every word if it.
