Retrievers "retrieve" things. Its what they do.... assigning a motive stretches things a bit..

it is unreasonable to think he intended to save it. He kept trying to get it to "wake up."

Right around the 30 second mark, the fawn tried to get up and run away.

I dunno why the clip repeated in slo-mo after that. The bit at the end was entirely useless.
