(12,132 posts)If I'm tired, mustard and relish is all I really need but I love a true Chicago dog (which is weird since individually I like not even half of those ingredients. But put them on a kosher hot dog and a poppy seed bun and they transform into magic in my mouth.)
Some days a can of Hormel chili (NO BEANS) and shredded cheddar cheese is good but I keep forgetting to try that with mustard. I will next time because that sounds good. I'd like to make chili for chili dogs but I've never gotten a pot of chili to last long enough to get to hot dogs.
Some day I'll get out west and see what's up with that Sonora dog business.

(18,837 posts)Many restaurants outside of Chicago cheat on the ingredients (good luck finding "neon green relish" or sport peppers in your local market).
BUT...you can get the Vienna Beef dogs online, as well as "Chicago Dog Kits" that have the poppyseed buns, neon green relish, sport peppers, celery salt and mustard...all you need to add are the tomatoes, onions and pickles.

(18,402 posts)or it ain't a Chicago dog. (We sometimes go to the source for a quick lunch: the Vienna Beef Company cafeteria itself, where the dogs are two for $5, with fries and a drink, and the workers wear hairnets.) Anyway, the prescribed (and inviolable) order is:
1. bun, poppy seed required
2. dog, all beef Vienna only
3. yellow mustard
4. neon green relish
5. chopped raw onion
6. tomato wedges
7. dill pickle spear
8. celery salt

Chili dog with onions and jalapeno slices. Jack cheese maybe.
An all the way foot long gets everything they've got and is eaten with knife and fork.
A Kosher beef dog with sauerkraut and maybe mustard and onions.
Life is too short for all the options!
Edit to add: Pigs in blankets - dip in thousand island dressing, or BBQ sauce

(24,259 posts)There's a difference that makes it a bit unique if it's made right.
I grew up in the capital district of NY with frequent trips to NYC. Chili sauce was very familiar and a favorite of my dad's and myself so he'd occasionally take me to a local dive with the best chili dogs as a reward or such. When my DH and I went to check out the north country near Canadian border for a possible new home years ago we discovered Michigan sauce on Glazier hot dogs and fell in love with the tasty sauce and dogs.
Anyway, here's a recipe for the sauce. There are lots of them online but so far this sounds the closest to our favorite place to enjoy them. You can add onions and mustard on top like you might a chili dog.
http://laurassweetspot.com/2011/06/14/michigan-sauce/
Someday I really should have a picnic, make up a batch of all three sauces and have the extended family and friends do a taste test just for fun.

(40,416 posts)It was one of the best places on the planet to witness professional baseball. Now all that are left are Wrigley Field, and Fenway Park. Sad!
Wonderful Tiger Stadium:
A view of Kaline's corner in right field.
Note: if your team flies to right against the Tigers, you'd dare not try to tag up from third. Al Kaline could fire a strike from the right field wall and threw out many trying that.
Hot dogs at Tiger Stadium were only ever called Red Hots. "Get yer Red Hots! Red Hots here. Get yer Red Hots!" It was always a burly guy because he carried a tank of hot water around the stands with him to keep the dogs hot, and the buns moist.
You could have anything you wanted on your Red Hot as long as it was mustard and/or fresh onions. The works included both, but nothing more. Some idiots would ask for ketchup. The vendor would inevitably growl, "Ketchup is at the concession under the stands." Heaven help the poor guy who asked for relish.
Red Hots here!! Get yer Red Hots!
Enjoy! Hope the Tigers win this season. Not looking too good right now.
My best to you all.

(14,565 posts)I break out with sebaceous cysts on my neck and face. Very scary because it's so sudden I can actually feel them forming. It's like a twister within my skin and then a hard and sometimes painful lump, depending where it is.
Fortunately I was diagnosed fairly quickly when this surfaced in 1995. I was eating bologna every day courtesy of my roommate who loved bologna sandwiches and chips. An internal medicine specialist did an evaluation, asked me questions, and pinpointed it to a chemical preservative in hot dogs and bologna.
I only strayed once and sure enough the cysts returned.
When I could eat hot dogs I liked them fried with the buns lightly toasted and plenty of relish, ketchup and chopped onions.

(14,565 posts)Mario Lemieux had a high profile case a year or so earlier. I had inflammation everywhere since the cysts were widespread on my face and neck.
So when I was diagnosed with merely an adverse reaction to a specific type of food it was quite a relief.
I do remember that I had a store bought box of frozen corn dogs a few years ago and did not get the cysts. But I didn't want to take a chance so I made it a one and done.
