The head cook told me that I was only one on station that hadn't signed up for the lip sync contest.

She assigned me to 3 other people and told us our song was Love Shack.

When the 4 of us got together to practice, it became apparent that she was telling this lie to everyone - she was so bad!

It turned out that my partner was a theater choreographer in her non-science life and she walked us and the other couple through the moves.

It was a pretty good show - my tech did a killer drag rendition of 'Barbie Girl' with our very talented gal diesel engineer - and we thought we would lose.

But we killed - and won.

I was living in Athens when they first got together.

Kate and Cindy were my servers at the El Dorado on many a weekend morning.

On my way home from campus, I used to hang out in the alley by the Morton Theater and listen to them write songs and practice.

Only saw them once before they left Athens for NYC - at the Georgia Theater in 1979 with the Razor Boys and the Tone Tones - dancing in the aisles it was a riot.

They met my second aunt at a party in NYC. She was heavily into the Occult and read them their Tarot Cards. She predicted their next album would have a big hit about world travel. That song turned to to be Roam and that is the reason the album was called "Cosmic Thing". My aunt is listed in the album's credits and Kate came up to Maine and presented her with a gold album.

Saw them at Legion Field at UGA in the mid 80's and were quite annoyed that nobody crouched to the ground during the "Down Down" verse of Rock Lobster - kid these days.

on edit - I still have a copy of their first 45...Rock Lobster and 52 Girls

I love all their songs. I was lucky enough to see them in concert at Great Woods. Unfortunately, while I was dancing on the wet grass, I blew out my knee and had to have surgery on it (for the third time) but it was worth it.

Last night of basic training (4 months) long at Ft. Knox.

"If this place doesn't pass inspection you all aren't leaving!!!" A bluff I'm sure but I wasn't taking any chances.

The drill Sargents said we could get our Sony Walkmans back so I went into the drawer (I hadn't actually brought one) and put together a player and headphones. The music choices were pure crap - Hair Metal- then I found B52's Cosmic Thing. Good album/tape. Having only listened to alternative in the 80's I knew of them - Rock Lobster etc. Listened this it at least 8 times in a row.

Drill Sgt of the night came around 2 or 3 am.
"Why are you the only one still cleaning?!?"
"Because I'm getting the f)ck out of here...Drill Sargeant"
"You're done. Hit your rack"
He woke everyone else up.

We left the next day after graduation.

Not a fan of Walk Like An Egyptian. However, I think the Bangles had some really good stuff back in the day. Susanna Hoffs has recently been guest hosting on Tom Petty Radio on xm and she is a wonderful host! Her taste in music is expansive and eclectic. Sorry...kind of off topic.
