Every year, the school district took all the patrol boys to Washington, DC. That's right, just the boys. The girls were not permitted to go.

With the help of a police officer that was with us at the time we actually saved some children from a drunk driver who almost ran us down. Had to testify in court. I was almost 12 years old.

Got an award from the County and got my picture in the paper and everything. Award was a special badge and new 'Sam Browne belt.

Don't have any idea at all anymore what the award was actually for - if I remember correctly, there was one recipient from several of the cities in the county.

monitoring kids getting on the school bus. Heck, I didn't really want to go to Washington anyway.

Why'd you have to bring up that memory?

Which was a crazy thing because I was also a pyromaniac.

I passed the quiz easily, 100%, because I knew so much about fire. I was reading the comic book style Junior Firefighters handbook entirely the wrong way. It wasn't meant to be an instruction manual.

Alas I didn't qualify for the safety patrol because I always had an "unsatisfactory" or two on my report cards, often for doing unsafe things like climbing up on the roof of the school to retrieve balls, playing with knives, or dodging across the street against the direct orders of adult crossing guards.

They took us to a Twins game at the Met. Only time I was there before they tore it down. Our seats were down the third baseline and it was a blazing hot sunny day. If I was forced to name who they played, I'd guess the A's, but it'd be only a guess.

North Shore Elementary, Duluth township, Minnesota. The Bomarc missile base was just south of the school. Twelve Hiroshima's worth of nuke tipped anti-aircraft missiles, less than a mile from the school.
