The DU Lounge

IMHO, nothing comes close to Ted's Hot Dogs, a small chain around Buffalo, NY. They have been expanding (Arizona) lately.

(9,258 posts)Totally the best. The restaurants are like a 50's time warp too, and ridiculously cheap.

(20,998 posts)...that said, I drove by the Tempe, AZ Ted's a few months ago and stopped in on a lark. GREAT DOGS!

(39,343 posts)I've tried all the big brands and I've even tried them at ballparks, but the quality has gone to shit in the past 7-10 years or so.

(12,132 posts)we used to always buy Oscar Meyer but at some point they started tasting funny. Never knew what they changed but they changed something. We get Hebrew National now and they are great but it's not something we do a lot - maybe once a month.
We don;t have a lot of hot dog shops around here. Not Dog Heaven is pretty good but too far to get often as we aren't on that side of town much.

(47,547 posts)I've been eating Dodger Dogs for fifty years, and I love them...at The Stadium.
I've had them elsewhere, for example at Staples Center, and I can tell you it's not quite the same.
Not as bad as having them at home. Yeesh! Might as well go to Wienerschnitzel.

(57,378 posts)A half-smoke is a "local sausage delicacy" found in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding region. Similar to a hot dog, but usually larger, spicier, and with more coarsely-ground meat, the sausage is often half-pork and half-beef, smoked, and served with herbs, onion, and chili sauce.

(45,470 posts)They are a bit hard to find in supermarkets these days with the exception of Capitol city brand available at shoppers food warehouse. I buy armor brand at Eastern Market. For restaurants, Ben's Chili Bowl is an option, but a new place called HalfSmoke just opened over in the Shaw neighborhood. Highly recommend.

(8,764 posts)I have not eaten at Top Dog since 2003 but ate at the then Durant and Hearst shops regularly during 3 stints as an undergrad and grad student at Cal in 1970s and 1980s. The Hearst location seems to be no more replaced by a Center location in downtown Berkeley.
Like others, I am yucked out by most sausage products available now and don't eat many, especially as am geezer and poor diet for health reasons.
Top Dog for nostalgia and that it seems to be the same basic establishment (actually several shops):

We don't even have hot dogs very often, and don't buy them for the house, but really like those places. So far, everyone here recommends Nathan's, so we'll check those out.
For everyday, Costco hot dogs are great. And of course...Dodger Dogs, yum.
