checking Wow airlines the fairs seem almost reasonable. The rest of the trip looks like it could be too.

(149,523 posts)My husband and I went on a tour in 2011.
It's a very interesting and often beautiful place.
Here's a few photos I took:
If you go, go in the summer! Even then, the highs are in the fifties. The sun does come out from time to time.

(16,161 posts)What would you say about the high points of your trip? I know that hotels are few and far in between so hostels and living in b&bs is the norm. What would one look out for?
Not being nosy, just curious as anything.
Did you fly WOW?

(149,523 posts)So our accommodations were already taken care of. This is one of the things that I like about tours. The planning is done by someone else and we just show up every morning!
WOW? What is that? We did fly, though I don't remember which airline.

(4,483 posts)on a tour to see the northern lights with some women from my college class. It really wasn't all that cold, in the 40s and drizzly mostly, and because of global warming the moisture in the air did not crystallize, so we were unable to see the NL during the five nights we were there. So don't expect to see the northern lights.
The landscape is truly remarkable and beautiful, like being on another planet.
Our trip was pretty inexpensive, but we did feel gouged at the restaurants our tour bus took us to. When we ate on our own, even in downtown Reykjavik, it was much more reasonable, and the food (especially the salmon) was delicious. Going on a tour even with a small group like ours meant we went to the same sites and restaurants as the really big groups, so there frequently was kind of a rush and/or long line. I can only imagine that it's more crowded in the spring/summer.
On President's Day, we demonstrated in our pussy hats, with signs reading "not our president," in front of the US embassy.
We had a geologist and an economist along, who gave lectures at every stop, and that was wonderful.
If I go back, I want to visit the northern coast of the island.

(269 posts)WOW Air is actually pretty good. It's a budget airline, so you have to pay for everything separately. And it's cramped, so get the front seats or emergency exit ones if you can. But we had great flights.
I highly recommend renting a cottage. That's what we did, through AirBNB - and we were there a year ago, so I could even send you the link to the one we rented, which was AMAZING. Had a hot tub on the deck and was an A-frame pine cottage. We were only on a short 3-day stopover, so we stayed about an hour-and-a-half Southeast of Reykjavik, almost right in the Golden Circle.
We drove around and saw the geyser, Gulfoss Falls, Blue Lagoon Spa (an absolute must), Keriđ crater. We spentna little time in Reykjavik. Next time we go back I'm doing the ring road in a camper van.
Be warned - the prices are had to swallow. Our rental car for 3 days was over $1000 CAD.
But the scenery is just amazing. It looks like a mythical world.
