They usually don't attack prey they can't drown immediately. That's how they kill.

I'm just wondering if they plan to harvest its meat. Lots of folks like it.

I imagine we'll see the rest of him next year at Nordstrom's in the form of attaché cases, earrings, and other overpriced tchotchkes after people eat the steaks this year.

You only get ONE tag for the whole season, and you hunt at night when you can see their eyes reflected, so the chance of picking out a monster sized one is slim. These guys got lucky, they may set the record for this year. The Bureau of Wildlife Management gets the money from the tag sales.

"You only get ONE tag for the whole season"

I know zero about hunting and had no idea gator hunting was even a thing or that there was a season for it.

Including your car registration once a year...tags.
For hunting you have buy licenses, in all states, I think, and for fishing.
then the state sets a limit on how many fish/ducks, etc. you can get every season.
every "season" is determined by the state.
For example, you only fish for salmon in a boat for 10 days, something like that, or only catch x number of fish, the limit of time and fish is set each year.

In the case of gators, a limited number of tags are sold, and you can only hunt in certain geographic limits.
If you bring in a gator, your tag becomes expired. They keep records.

They also have bear hunting in some states.

There are plenty of alligators, btw, since the states started to regulate the hunts.
Off season, experienced hunters will be hired by the state to locate any nuisance gators, say one starts roaming a golf course, or attacking people in an area.

2017 West Central Alabama River Alligator Hunt Results Week 1

Patrick Stabler was mighty proud of his 12? 7?, 607 pound alligator caught on the first night of the West Central Alabama River Zone hunt. Because of torrential rains, floating debris in the river and early morning fog, week one was a challenge for the 50 tag holders. Only 12 of the 50 tags were filled in week one. 21 tags were filled in week one of the 2016 season but Patrick’s gator was bigger than last years 12? 6?, 562 pound big gator brought in by Jessica Guy Anderson.
